Metal was my first true musical love. I connected with thrash metal in particular. Admittedly, I've never really been able to get into much metal from 2000-. A few names do come to mind. I love Ghost and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, although that may be because they are reminiscent of old school bands, and they do it well. Ghost in particular has given its own spin so it isn't entirely derivative.

Actually most of the shows I've been to have been metal shows. I've seen all the Big 4 of thrash, and actually the first show I ever went to was Anthrax, with Testament and Death Angel as opening acts. Overkill has always been my favorite thrash band not in the Big 4.

Well... I grew up with Metal… Very Happy

Back in '78 our local radio station had listener's album charts… and they we're dominated by hard and - for that time - heavy music. Rainbow, Ufo, The Scorpions...

Then happened the real thing! The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal… Each monday three or four kids from school entered their local record store and bought each and every new album and 7" from the UK... Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Vardis, Diamond Head, Demon. A II Z, Tank, Praxing Mantis, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Angel Witch, Fist, White Spirit, Dark Star, Witchfynder General, Girlschool, Witchfynde,... Saxon... and of course as well bands from other countries like Accept, Krokus, Loudness, Trust, Mercyful Fate…

And there were two important live events. Iron Maiden supporting Kiss in Germany and blowing them from stage. I was very much into Kiss at that time, but Iron Maiden were much more impressing without pyros and big show effects. The other one: Saxon on tour with Judas Priest... amazing.

Well, the rest is history... Very Happy

And today we have such a great variety of different metal styles. Something for every taste... Wink

My favorites today are Primordial, Amorphis, Lake Of Tear, Anathema, Katatonia... a lot of the female fronted symphonic metal bands like Nightwish, Epica, Within' Temptation, Leave's Eyes... a lot of progressive Metal like Dream Theater, Threshold, Queensryche, Symphony X, Subsignal, Vanden Plas...

Unfortunately no one gonna discuss or share metal artists here in BEA, is one of the most ignored genres here.
Agreed, but that's why Metal Thread is a great idea

you mean after i made this same exact thread years ago and it got buried

metal is not prominent on BEA because there is no amount of core that cares about it beyond every now and again posters on the message board minority lol

Metal is underrepresented on this site, but it's over represented on rym.

BTW, I checked out this Haiduk guy's album, and it actually wasn't half bad.

if you think its overrepresented on RYM i don't know if you actually interact with the culture on RYM at all. even amongst the charts it is not the most significant genre and only certain subgenres have appeal to the RYM consensus.

Yeah, I wouldn't say it's over represented on RYM. There were 5-6 metal albums in the top 100 last time I checked, and they were all unsurprisingly by Black Sabbath and Metallica. Which is ok since they're some of the most important bands in metal, but it shows that metal surely isn't overrepresented on RYM since they're pretty basic metal picks, and also they're not very high in the charts. If anything, it means not enough metalheads vote and participate in RYM community, otherwise Death, Megadeth, Opeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest would all be higher than at least a few of those Black Sabbath and Metallica records. My favourite site for ranking and discovering metal would be Metal Storm, I like their rankings most of the time. They do tend to dislike "hipster" metal bands though (Deafheaven etc.)

Hipster metal? Wow. I would have never guessed there was such a thin. Seems like an oxymoron.
