Rooting for a Holter upset. It'll take running the table among the SoK voters, new voters turning out, some voters changing their minds, or some combination of the three. _________________ Add me on RYM
Would Holter winning be an upset? Feel this will be tight either way. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
It's not anybody's fault, but the final feels strangely anticlimactic in that users have generally already said all that they have to say about these songs by this point in the tournament. Both are fantastic, majestic songs, but there's a sense of fun and joy and life to Hval's that I don't necessarily get quite as strongly from Holter's, even if I preferred Aviary as a whole to every Hval LP barring her strangely underappreciated masterpiece, Apocalypse, girl. It's cool that the final is between two women whose work is often challenging (at least in terms of shying away from predictable sounds and structures), even if these particular examples find them at their poppiest and most accessible.
I found some great songs in this tournament, and it was cool to see a lot of my favourites (be it those nominated by myself or by others) do really well. There were also some very interesting conversations that took place because of this tournament, and it was fun reading the reasons behind people's votes, especially when they differed from my own. A raging success all-round, with active participation throughout. Thanks Saoirse (and NWJ) for the hard work. Guess I'll see y'all next year to defend my crownpick more arguments with Fischmannominate four Freddie Gibbs songs find even more great songs I will inevitably have missed. _________________ 2021 in full effect. I agree with Skinny that Spells is more joyful and uplifting track but, for me, Words I Heard is the most profoundly moving track of last year. It has that feeling of taking you completely out of yourself . I love the way the emotion of the track increases as the song develops (the way Julia does this with pauses and quieter moments is particularly beguiling). It is incredibly weightless and Holter manages the strings and vocal performance superbly so that not a note is wasted. Still, I wouldn't mind this track losing the final-I'm glad it has got this far.
Yeah, there is oddly a few votes not in yet but I think Spells probably has it-and a worthy winner it is. You play that track to anyone with at least a vague interest in music and they'll be impressed. Chapeau.
Also, much thanks to CGD and Jimmy for organising a fun and interesting tourney Hope we do the same again next year.
yeah I expected a bit of tournament fatigue by this point, esp since the final basically happened already and this is just a run-off. But again much much thanks to everybody who's participated in the tournament and my wonderful co-runner Mr Dread for helping it run smoothly, will probably be back to do this more in a decade setting than just a single year (a better idea than doing decade polls).
Will keep this open till tomorrow night for any last minute voters
