Hello BEA!
I'm an aspiring music journalist and want to start writing some pieces in order to build up a basic portfolio of music criticism, and since it's 2019 I thought I'd make a top ten of each of the last 5 years ending in nine ('69, '79, '89, '99, '09) and do a little write up for each record to post online/on my upcoming blog.
At the moment I'm reviewing all the recommendations I've accrued over the years, and I've added to the lists every album in those years that I've given an 8 or better (see my overall chart for my rating system: Top 30 Greatest Music Albums by sidneyfranklyn) but am in need of some recommendations to complete some of these top tens!
I'll start this thread with my 1969 chart: Top 7 Music Albums of 1969 by sidneyfranklyn
and feel free to check out my ratings to see if I've already reviewed something that you want to recommend.
Please please send as many of your favourite albums (the more obscure the better) from 1969 my way!!

For 1969 you need
Frank Zappa's Hot Rats
Terry Riley's A Rainbow In Curved Air
Janis Joplin's I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!

Thank you so much for your recommendations; a lot to churn through will get cracking as soon as possible.
craola wrote: | for 1969, i recommend you check out Tim Buckley: Blue Afternoon | added to the list, thank you! I know Starsailor though I think I was a little harsh in my reception, may have to revisit that alongside this one.
Hayden wrote: | Comme À La Radio is a good sign. I'd give these a spin | I know!! So amazing, been meaning to get more into French chanson; I noticed that Tous les Garcons et les Filles is a fave of yours so will check that out at some point. And as for your recommendations, all look great! I do actually know Electric Storm (reviewed it recently for this list) and though it was interesting I thought it had more potential than it lived up to and so it's 6/7 border for me (by no means a bad score on my system!)
I'm a big fan of Can, and I reviewed that album and gave it a 7 (very good!), adored 'Mary, Mary ...' and really enjoyed that massive closer but I didn't think it was up to the standard of their other stuff I've heard. I'll make sure I listen to your other two recs though!

Janis Joplin's I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! | I know Hot Rats and A Rainbow Curved Air already, but will listen to the Janis Joplin record! I found the first side of Hot Rats really compelling but lost interest a little with the second, and with A Rainbow In Curved Air the other way round, thought the title track sounded really dated BUT Poppy Nogood is incredible!! If both tracks were that level it would be right at the top of my list no doubt ...
Keep 'em coming people!

Keep in mind Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles is nowhere close to Comme À La Radio Practically opposite ends of that genre's spectrum.
Also, add 1959 to the list By all means it was a much better year for music that '89 and possibly even '09. Plenty of great releases to pick from (and not just jazz).

Aha I would if I had the time, I'm trying to balance the final year of my degree with this is a side project. Plus I'm v keen to move on to '79 & '99.
Hayden wrote: | By all means it was a much better year for music that '89 and possibly even '09 | tell me about '89, very much struggling for a list of favourites, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. As for '09 - I'm not so sure. Already got a top 5 I'm v proud of and looking forward to diving in to the couple I've got left on my to-do list. Anyway, we'll have to save all that for later!!

Since your Top 30 list reaches back to a Mingus classic in '63, I'm gonna' go ahead and give you some '59 recommendations of an avant garde/progressive jazz nature that you might also find interesting and list-worthy:
1. Sun Ra and His Arkestra - Jazz in Silhouette
2. Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
3. Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come
While anything but obscure, '59 is also the year of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. It is also the year of my all time favorite jazz album, Art Blakey's Moanin'.
