Personally I am a huge fan of older recordings and music preservation is one of those things I'm endlessly entertained by reading about. So you can imagine my disappointment at seeing the decade charts only go back to the 1950s, despite the fact that (as far as I can tell) there's a substantial amount of albums from the 40s and even older in the database.

Now I get that there may not be enough 40s albums to fill an entire chart up to 100, we're not obligated to fill the charts up to that, so why not allow 40s charts and then those of us who like old records can put in our 50 or so albums?

Heck, I'd be ok with the chart being "1940s and older" and then throwing in any older record I find that I enjoy (because, again, there's some quality 1930s albums out there and on the site's database)

I acknowledge I could do this with a Custom chart (when I reach that stage) but the custom charts don't add points to the albums, and having points makes it SO much easier to keep track of albums. Case in point, look up the best albums of the 30s and we only see one (Negro Sinful Songs by Leadbelly) because it seems to be the only with any rank points, and that's probably just because I have it on my overall chart.

I second this. I don’t think it’s fair that older albums can’t earn points in all the same ways that later albums can, and the overall charts for the 30s and 40s are useless since there are so few albums from those decades that make their way onto users’ overall charts (like you said).

My guess at the reason for the lack of these decades charts is a general lack of interest, and maybe a concern that those albums will earn more points relative to later albums than the users ranking them would ever intend, skewing the overall chart. But, I think they should exist regardless of interest, and I think expanding users’ overall charts to 1000 would attenuate any perceived overestimation (or manipulation) of older albums.

I think having one "decade chart" for 1940s and earlier is a great idea.

Well, obviously. But that doesn't mean this feature wouldn't be useful.

The RYM database has ~922 albums from before 1950 (not counting compilations etc.)

I don't see any reason not to. It doesn't seem like a very necessary function, but it could help us expand our horizons. Besides, it's interesting to check out all that early classical and space age pop sometimes.

We have somewhere in the ~300 range, and that's without the charts (also keeping in mind our time/tracklisting restrictions). I think only 20 actually show up when you filter the decade though.

I don't know about a 40s chart... there's a couple users with 40s charts under the custom chart option, but that doesn't count towards the overall point tally. I'm somewhat with Gowi on this. I won't complain if it's added, but I'm not positive it's needed. I'd probably whip up a top 10 or something.

I'd like to see more users listen to albums from the 50s. I still think we're a little ignorant on a whole for that decade.

There isn't a very wide selection of early-50's gems, unfortunately, but I do agree with you.

It's not a big change for the site to enable 1940s decade charts, but it's a lot harder to allow '1940s and earlier' charts as the site is structured by year/decade and this would break how the site works. (Not sure how many 1910s/'20s/'30's albums that the site would be missing out on, but could equally add these decades as well if there are people that want them).

EDIT: Now enabled 1940s decade charts.
