I have long wanted to post a jazz diary, but wasn't sure what form it should take. Originally, I figured I'd just share my old favorites along with new discoveries as I came across them. However, having appreciated Seth's (aka Round the Bend) classical journey, I've settled on a similar timeline structure, beginning with the earliest jazz recordings and proceeding to the modern day.

Like Classical, Jazz is a rich genre with many periods, subgenres, and sounds which have evolved and branched out in the roughly 100 years the form has been around. If you don't like one era, keep checking in as others will come. My journey through the earliest period will go rather quickly as there aren't a lot of recordings and the form had yet to grow and gain diversity.

I will follow chronological order for the most part, but chronology will follow recording date rather than album release date. This is necessary since much of jazz precedes the album era and all the albums of early recordings are compilations released much later than the original 78s. Even later and since the beginning of the album era, many recordings, including those intended as album sets from the very beginning, would sit in vaults for years or even decades before release.

Per my original thought, I will mix relistens of old favorites with more in-depth listens of not necessarily favorites, and new-to-me recordings I'm checking out for the first time. The focus will be on historically significant and artistically relevant recordings, but not exclusively. I will mix in things which may not be top of the critical heap, but are relevant to me in some way and try to share the why and the joy I get from those lesser known albums. Also, some biggies will be left out purely to keep things moving along, or else this could be a 20 year project!

I will try to keep things moving along, but like most, I have a day job, family, and other interests, so life comes first.

(I'm also planning a Classical diary, but unlike this and others, it will focus exclusively on lesser known or (IMO) underappreciated works, which will also take some time)

Any and all comments, analysis, and sharing along the way are welcome! For jazz fans, it could be a lot of fun, and for non fans, it can be an opportunity to expand musical horizons.

Now, let's go on a jazz journey through time!

Check out the album below, if you’d like. It features hours of interview conducted by Alan Lomax with Morton, who discusses the birth of jazz at length. Enjoy the trip man, it sounds like a lot of fun!

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band - 1917 - 1921
Recording Date
: 1917 - 1921
Release Date: 2017
Style or Subgenre: Dixieland Jazz

If you're going to start a diary, you might as well start at the beginning!

While the Original Dixieland Jass Band (the spelling of the genre was not yet settled at the time), was not the first jazz outfit out there, they are generally considered to be the first to record with the release of "Livery Stable Blues" and "Dixie Jass Band One Step" in 1917. It is worth noting that while Jazz is for the most part an inherently African American form, especially in those early days, the ODJB was an all white ensemble, which no doubt contributed tho their being the first one to put down tracks and sell records under their own name.

Listener's background: My journey through Jazz has, in a way resembled my journey through Blues. That is to say it wasn't linear or chronological. With blues, which I discovered a decade before jazz, i was introduced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, who then led me to the likes of Albert King and Buddy Guy. Later, I got around to exploring the earliest bluesmen, and didn't quickly take to it. This was partially to the distance from familiar music and sounds, and partly due to the rawness of the performances and roughness of the recordings. So it was with Jazz. It took me a while to warm up to the early recordings. Fortunately, having overcome my demand for audiophile quality sound via my blues journey, I was more ready to make that leap when approaching early jazz. My brain had already been trained to not be distracted by the sound quality and instead focus on the music itself, independent of recording imperfections.

This music swings merrily along combining new forms of instrumental interplay and the sheer joy of music making. It practically transports the listener right onto Bourbon Street at the end of World War I. It's easy to see how this crazy new music could have brought so much joy... or horror... to the first to hear it back in the day. Some found it to be a delightful new window into musical expression and others thought it the work of the Devil himself. I like to think that, had I been who I am in 1917 rather than 2017, I would have been one of the former. The way the instruments all weave their their lines in and out between each other definitely activates happy chemicals in my brain.

King Oliver - Off the Record: The Complete 1923 Jazz Band Recordings
Recording Date:
1923
Release Date: 2007
Style or Subgenre: Dixieland Jazz

Like the ODJB entry in the first post above, this is classic dixieland jazz right from the origin of the species. In addition to being there close to the beginning, Joe "King" Oliver was historically significant for a couple other reasons. As a cornetist, he introduced the use of the mute in Jazz, and he employed the great but as yet anonymous Louis Armstrong in his band.

This album presents all 37 recordings made by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in 1923. It is one of the more recent remasterings of these recordings and strikes a good balance between cleaning up the hiss and pop of the old 78s while keeping as much of the warmth and nostalgia of the original recordings as possible.

As compared to the ODJB, recordings above, the music itself and the presentation (stylistic delivery, not sound quality) is a smidge more primitive. Which is not a bad thing. The ODJB arrangements were a little more layered, maybe a little more musically intricate or complex, but these King Oliver songs are maybe just a tad more lively in the sense that these guys are out there blowing their hearts out and having fun with it. But this is real hair splitting as the ODJB tunes are plenty lively and the Oliver Band are no technical slouches. Either one would provide a great intro to the earliest roots of jazz.

Bix Biederbecke - Bix and His Gang
Recording Date:
1927 - 1928
Release Date: 1981
Style or Subgenre: Early Jazz

Bix Biederbecke was the first bad boy of Jazz. He was notorious with women and liquor. Long before heroin would ruin the careers (and lives) of numerous jazz (and rock) musicians, Bix managed to drink himself into a grave at all-too-young age of 28 (roughly the same lifespan as Jimi Hendrix). Bix is a legend to this day despite, or maybe because of his, having flamed out so early (again like Hendrix) and in yet another Hendrix similarity, Bix has far more albums released as compilations or posthumous releases than what he actually recorded during his all to brief life and musically productive period.

Having read about Bix' proclivities, I was expecting some rather wild music; after all, this was a wild man attacking the wildest new musical form of the day. However, in comparison to the aforementioned Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and especially King Oliver (or Jimi Hendrix again for that matter), Bix' recordings seem much more measured. All early/dixie jazz will sound pretty much the same to the uninitiated or uninterested ear, but some differences take a while to soak in and others are immediately apparent to the critical listener.

There is a little more classical influence and a little less of the spirituals/work song influence. The music is lively enough, it swings, but it just feels a little more, for lack of a better word, I'll say controlled. A fun enough listen, and very full of nostalgia, but not something that makes me want to go after it again as much as King Oliver.

Louis Armstrong - The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings
Recording Date:
1926 – 1928, 1940-1941
Release Date: 2007
Style or Subgenre: Dixieland Jazz, Early Jazz

After a few entries from important but not so well known artists, we now have our first household name: Louis Armstrong, easily one of the most important artists not only in the history of jazz, but in music, period. As previously noted, Louis started out in King Oliver’s band. You know the old saying “Behind every great man, there is a great woman urging him on”? Well, it was Louis’ second wife, Lil Hardin, who urged him to leave King Oliver and strike out on his own…. and the world of music was richer as a result!

Louis seems to stike the perfect balance between the abandon of King Oliver and the classical precision of Bix Biederbecke. It’s also easy to see other reasons for his popularity. His effervescent personality is well reflected in his music. What’s more, by interjecting his gravelly tenor vocals into the music, he was able to break up the monotony (to some) of the relentless instrumental onslaught of a nonstop jazz band.

In listening to these recordings, I appreciated the additional variety Louis introduced into the genre. Not only did he mix up tempos and include vocals, he was more effective at deploying his instrumentation. Surprisingly, the banjo (played by Johnny St. Cyr), which we usually associate with bluegrass, makes a fine rhythm instrument for his raucous recordings. He also makes very effective use of his trombone (John Thomas), bringing some more very welcome low end into the fray.

It is believed he first popularized scat singing with his gravelly improvising on "Heebee Jeebies." He also brought improvisation itself into the light where his few forebears in early jazz mostly stuck to the script.

Link

Maybe no other song perfectly shows his combination of instrumental and vocal ability, along with the ability to integrate them into a delightful whole, than You Made Me Love You. From the liner notes:
On November 27, Armstrong was the sole entertainer on two more Venable numbers. “You Made Me love You” (not to be confused with the al Jolson hit) gets underway with a moaning Kid Ory [trombone] and sanguine Johnny Dodds [clarinet], only to be blown from its moorings by Louis’s wildly aggressive vocal. His more serene cornet solo, which is no less robust, begins a measure early (a frequent ply, as though he can’t wait to get going) and unfolds with and intensifying riff and high-note break.

Link

In many genres, we often talk of the battle between virtuosity and feeling. Early on, Louis could deliver both. A fine example is “Wild Man Blues,” composed by Jelly Roll Morton. From the liner notes:
Jelly Roll Morton’s “Wild Man Blues” compresses that excitement in a superbly modulated blues, each phrase ending with a break that ranges from hoochie-coochie seriousness to extravagant virtuosity. At once dazzling and moving, Louis rivets attention. Once again, Dodds is inspired – especially the closing episode of his stop-time chorus. Yet Armstrong functions on another level. Musicians shook their heads in wonder when they heard this record in 1927, and still do: Who today improvises with as much force, economy, wit, and imagination?

Jelly Roll Morton - Jelly Roll Morton 1926 - 1930
Rec
ording Date:
1926 - 1930
Release Date: 2000
Style or Subgenre: Dixieland, Ragtime

Most folks have at least heard the name Jelly Roll Morton and a few know he was a pivotal proponent of early jazz.
Those who have studied him know him to be a hard drinking womanizer with no shortage of scandal in his background. Personal mores aside, he was a marvelous composer who really helped get jazz rolling, but in his own very personal and distinct way. He was equally adept at small ensemble and solo piano music. It's fascinating to hear him put stride piano/ragtime at the core of his evolving jazz palette. This is a massive, 5 disc set that will quickly produce overload for anyone not enamored with the genre to begin with. For those looking for an introduction rather than completist-level coverage should look into the Library of Congress recording Jameth recommended above, especially since it deftly balances the ensemble and solo recordings along with narration, breaking up any monotony.

This is a great log! Way better written than me stumbling through stuff I know nothing about! Great samples/finds... reminds me of Ken Burns' PBS jazz special (I only watched the first half through the 40s). I'm fully looking forward to this playing out. Are you establishing a list/spreadsheet to go along (asking mostly so I can add it to my listening list... but if not, it's not hard to use your BEA lists, etc... but I really like your year recorded section). If not I'm hoping to get there too. RYM has a decent database for pre-album era (1950) music.

I do have a spread sheet of what I plan on listening to, and it will undoubtedly evolve as I move along, with both additions and subtractions made as I go. So far, I'm just coloring in the cells containing the items I've already listened to and reviewed in this thread. Is there a way to upload/update/share spreadsheets here? If not, I could certainly just build a standard list with these entries.
