I can't remember the last time an active music thread got locked - can anyone refresh me? I feel like things would have to go off the rails in a big way for that to happen. Like an invasion of stans sleuthing out home addresses or something.

i could've sworn a thread or two involving nirvana getting locked relatively recently, but the two that came up via search are still open despite going waaay off the rails.

love can be the larval form of hate, so when love comes crashing down, i like to think you're being spared the alternative.

(Puts Headphones Down)

You know what... I like it. I still stand by my original statement that if you've heard one Lana song you've heard 'em all, but it seems like her confidience & craft has finally come together and, despite the creamy polish, the numbers are at least building rather than merely echoing one another, actually trying to mean something more tangible rather than the cliq'ue of a more concrete idea. It's the record of hers that feels the least monochromatic, despite having a pervasively langorous and moody tone as always, and she has figured how to maximize her limited range but still very distinct singing style. That being said... I don't know if I'm buying into the GOTY hype. The place she goes immediately after the admittedly draining "Venice Bitch" is a bit off-putting, at least on first listen, and some songs seem to promise the world but don't really go anywhere ("California" is the worst offender). A feeling while a lot of songs are stellar, I don't know if the sum of it's part leads up to a truly great album. That being said, I also really like how it balances out the more ambitious songs like the aforementioned "VB", "HIBB" and "TG" with some just really sweet, well-crafted jukebox-throwback numbers like "How to Dissapear", and I do like the overall vibe of the record a lot even if I don't think it works in every aspect. So, I don't know, maybe it'll be a bit of another "Melodrama" situation where everybody seems to be putting in the pop Hall of Fame and moreso I see it in the Hall of the Very Very Good, but I donno maybe it will click with more listens or will still at least stand as a very accomplished record of it's kind that definitely delivers at least most of what it promises. So, definitely a much, much mightier blow than everything else she's produced since "Video Games", even if that track will always perhaps rightfully define her career.

EDIT: Though seriously, what's with the Powerman 5000-ish or late 90s ska band album cover?

9.4? Jesus Christ. Getting hyped to hear this.

On a semi-related note I happened to listen to Red for the first time recently (although it was because of my friend’s rec, not Pitchfork’s), and it was significantly better than expected. Really enjoyed it, although 9 seems extreme.

P.S. My great grandpa was a model for Rockwell and the museum is close to where I grew up. I wonder how his family feels about the title.
