Damn, you went full retard here... Where on earth do you hear those bands in Tool's music?

Anyway, this is one of my favourite albums. The atmosphere throughout is fantastic, really dark, working really well with Maynard's similarly dark and/or "angry" lyrics. And if we're talking about lyrics, I have to say that this album is (for me) near perfect in this aspect.. Sometimes clever, sometimes funny, sometimes just angry and often making a damn good point (like calling BS on certain kind of people).
Often when I like a song, but don't totally get the lyrics, I try to read into them, maybe interpret them, or at least put some sort of meaning behind them. A lot of times I end up being even more confused than before, but Aenima is one of those examples when i read into lyrics and they actually start making a whole lot of sense.

Example 1 - Aenema:

Some say the end is near
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon
I certainly hope we will
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away
Any fucking time, any fucking day
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona Bay

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your Prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car

[...]
One great big festering neon distraction
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied
(Learn to swim)
[...]
Then towards the end comes one of my favourite parts of any song ever (-after the "fuck everything" part):

Because I'm praying for mayhem
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I want to see the ground give way
I want to watch it all go down
Mom, please flush it all away
I want to see it go right in and down
I want to watch it go right in
Watch you flush it all away

Time to bring it down again
Don't just call me pessimist
Try and read between the lines

I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend

(don't know about you, but there's a whole bunch of times when I feel this pissed off about the world and this song fits like no other at times like that)

Example 2 - Stinkfist
A song about... fisting.

[...]

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive.

Finger deep within the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Relax, turn around and take my hand.

[...]

Blend and balance
Pain and comfort
Deep within you
Till you will not want me any other way.

[...]

Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something.

[...]
The lyrics in chorus progress from "fingers" within the borderline to knuckle, elbow and eventually shoulder:

Example 3 - Eulogy
(wonderful atmosphere here, love the way it builds through entire song - not a second is wasted)

He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.
I'll miss him.
[...]

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

But it was so loud.
And you sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And it was so loud.

You could be the one who saves me from my own existence.
[...]

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, and
Someone who would die for me.
[...]

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own
eulogy?
...
Example 4 - Jimmy
If you take a second to google Maynard, and to find out what has happened to his mother, and when it happened... well then you get what this song is about. And when I had that in mind, this song started to mean a lot more to me.

What was it like to see,
The face of your own stability,
Suddenly look away,
Leaving you with the dead and hopeless?

Eleven and she was gone.
Eleven is when we waved good-bye.
Eleven is standing still,
Waiting for me to free him,
By coming home.
[...]

(the transition into the following part of the song (+ the actual part until "I'm heading back home") is one of my favourite moments in music ever)

Hold your light,
Eleven, Lead me through each gentle step,
By step,
By inch by loaded memory,
I'll move,
To heal,
As soon as pain allows so we can,
Reunite,
And both move on together.

Hold,
Your light,
Eleven lead me through each gentle step,
By step,
By inch by loaded memory 'till,
One,
And one are one,
Eleven.
So glow,
Child,
Glow.
I'm heading back home...

... I'll stop there because no one will read this anyway. But above are probably the four most important songs on the album for me.

About "Hooker with a Penis" - it's probably lyrically the weakest song on the album, as it is basically just a rant over somebody accusing them of selling out, but I still think it's a good song. And despite all his anger and cursing, Maynard makes a good point: All that you know about me is what I've sold you. & I sold out long before you ever heard me. I sold my soul to make a record

BTW, just listening to these songs while I was writing this reminded me of how damn good this album is.

I'm sorry Loveless...(and anyone else who likes Tool), but they are complete crap. Most BORING albums ever Embarassed I've never struggled to listen to a bands music more.

They have cool album covers though Smile

Considering they're still ranked 120th and have an average rating of 80, it seems that a lot of people like this album. I'm definitely not one of them though.

One of the best and most important hard rock albums of the 90s...maybe even #2 after Nevermind. Aenima will age at least as well as anything from that period.

It's a good album. Not Tool's best, I don't think, but certainly worth hearing. The gigantic riffs alone make this worthwhile.

Agree 100%, every Tool song on every album sounds exactly the damn same, and yes I've listened to all of their albums, I had a friend in high school that was big into them. I've seen them in concert twice I could have slept through both shows if not for the boobs. The only other band that frustrates me as much with their overwhelming mediocrity is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
