I've been wanting to delete my current chart and do this in its place for a while. This seems like a more reasonable choice -- plus, maybe it'll inspire responses from fellow metal-lovers out there...who knows...
Many consider Led Zep to be metal, and at the time they were. However I am not including anything that is less "metal" than Black Sabbath. That also goes for bands like BOC, Deep Purple, AC/DC, KISS (who sucks anyway), and other 70s acts who got the metal tag during their heyday.

This is just a first run-through, so I know I left out a LOT. Feel free to add to this. So, without any more a-do's and a-don't's...

Oh my. 100? If I even try to put together a list of 100, I will implode in on myself.

But I will put together a list. In due time...

Bold=choices I'm hyped on!

Some notable exclusions(bands as well as specific albums):

Dopethrone(as many others have mentioned)
Mastodon
No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith/Ace of Spades(Motorhead)
Angel Dust(Faith No More)
Mr. Bungle
Boris
Melvins
High on Fire
Rising(Rainbow)
Balls to the Wall(Accept)
At the Heart of Winter(Immortal)
Pig Destroyer
Burning Witch
Blues For the Red Sun(Kyuss)
Vulgar Display of Power(Pantera)
Angel Witch
Exodus
Napalm Death
Cave In
Celtic Frost
Wolves in the Throne Room
Colors(Between the Buried and Me)

That's a lot of things I know, but I don't want to make it sound like I hated the list, I actually thought it was really great.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I need it because I have never made a top metal list that felt complete to me. We're well on the way with some great suggestions.

40ftwolf: love most of the recommends...i'm being a bit rigid with the definition of metal, excluding bands like melvins, mr. bungle, kyuss etc. But you are right that Mastodon, Napalm Death, Dopethrone, Rainbow, Cave In need to be considered.

Hmm, I've never heard Melvins considered anything but sludge metal...
