I loved St. Vincent for a long time before this record, but this is the album that really felt like a turning point, and not for the better. The songwriting is fine and the focus isn't too bad, but it lacks the vibrance and consistency of both Strange Mercy and Actor--the latter of which remains one of my absolute favorite albums ever. Her s/t is still good, but it's not my favorite of hers.

Track picks
1. Rattlesnake
2. Birth In Reverse
5. Digital Witness
10. Every Tear Disappears

Yeah this is where she stopped just writing music and became focused on myth-making, resulting in an elaborate album that sounds great on paper but is as boring and safe an "avant-garde-indie" (is that a thing?) record as one could possibly be.
