Top 10+ Music, Movies, and Visual Art of the Week (2020)

NOTE: This is a log of my favorite works of music, cinema and/or visual art for the given week. The rankings here will not necessarily parallel my overall rankings, as these are only what I favored for the given week. To qualify for inclusion, the work must be rated 6.8/10 or better (or at least was at some point during the week). This log will also include updated ratings for my various lists (below the "Top 10+" section)

Below that, there will be a running listing of my "Top 50 Works of Art of the Year". This is simply a log of my favorite art over the course of this whole year, whether old or new to me. This list is cumulative, week-to-week, until its final standings at the end of the year.

Recommendations and suggestions welcome. For my criteria, go here: http://www.besteveralbums.com/phpBB2/vi...hp?t=15503

Bringing It All Back Home finally getting the recognition it deserves!
On the other hand, I'm not sure why Gorilla and Philosophy of the World have been downgraded to 5? Gorilla is a lot of fun.

Yes - fwiw Bringing It was in my top 50 ... um ... about 18-20 years ago Laughing but then again, so was A Rush of Blood to the Head so I dont think I really called this one - you did!

I agree theyre fun. Both Gorilla and Philosophy used to be unrated but "probably" 7s but with revisitations such things only hold if there is requisite depth (fun or otherwise) and I didnt see it in those this time (though am completely open to them in the future). I have a harder time seeing the value in (more or less) "pointless" albums or albums that are overly infatuated with novelty without also much emotional/conceptual conviction/purpose but it's possible Im not viewing those ones from the "correct" perspective (and thus, causing an unwarranted bias that is blocking my appreciation from seeing how superb/amazing they are). I havent listened to this "subculture" of music history much recently and I might just be a little rusty to its merits. It's possible I just need to revisit a bit of Zappa and then traverse through Bonzo Doo Dog and other wild 60s-cultural satire works, etc, which I hadnt done much of in probably a decade. This will either reinvigorate my interest in Bonzo Doo Dogs works or further serve to illuminate why I think theyre of much less value/significance.

I personally think it could go even higher (7.5 or Cool but 7 is pretty good considering the previous rating!
Philosophy of the World is one of those works that is "unrateable" in a way, because of obvious reasons (in the same way The Room is, although I like that one too). I was quite surprised about Bonzo Doo Dog Band because you like Zappa; I'm pretty sure you'll rate them higher when you revisit them.

Kinda similar to my last reply to Facetious. I did find it compelling and also had it as "Unrated/Probably 7" but started to quickly diminish in returns after a couple revisits. Maybe I'm missing something essential about the album's actual substance/point/purpose but I had to ask myself while revisiting it 3 times consecutively: is this really more substantial than much of The Beatles contemporary pop art, even if maybe slightly more idiosynchratic on avg? But is it actually better than one of their better idiosynchratic works like, say, The White Album (6-6.5) which it seems like something of a precursor to? It seems much closer in quality/impact to their lesser (but still good) albums like Revolver (5-5.5).

To Facetious/DelBoca

Especially with albums where Scaruffi and I differ a lot, I will tend to give them extra chances in the future beyond what I might with others (it goes without saying that his success rate for me is very high so deserves extra chances so to speak).

So, as I am revisiting lots of these 60s psychedelia works and so on, I'll continue to go back and check on those I dismissed but he rates quite a bit higher, just to make sure what I thought still holds or not, and to see if my increased familiarity with the period, its surrounding works, and revisits, shines any further light on that.

Nice try Wink

Very unlikely unless there is something particularly impressive about it being missed all these years (not impossible, never say never, but...).

If its a 7 then all of a sudden a domino effect of ratings changes of much better, relatively comparable works would throw things out of whack like... Odyseey & Oracle and Sgt Pepper 8.5s, Skylarking 9/10 and all sorts of whacky imbalances
