I second Kacey Musgraves. This is my favorite country album by a woman (and possibly my favorite country album, period), and it's a pretty accessible entry point into the genre for someone more familiar with pop or indie music.
Emmylou Harris is probably my favorite country artist. She has lots of great albums, but this one played a big role in getting me into country. Boulder To Birmingham in particular is a devastatingly beautiful song about the death of her friend Gram Parsons (another artist who played a big role in getting me into country, and Harris has a lot of guest vocals on his albums).
P.S. If the woman has no memory of the kiss that she is given at the end of the song, I have no further use for her. _________________ Me & my favorite singer James Otto
Any solid Patsy Cline compilation should do. Maybe my favourite vocalist. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
Hope it's okay if I intrude here. I know very little about country, and as I like the human touch, I thought I'd see if there was any entry-level albums you'd recommend? Albums by women preferred, as I'm trying to do baystate's Women's History Month project, but any and all fine.
Cheers in advance.
1). George Jones sings so good, make your dick hard. (Mojo Nixon)
2) Stay away from anything pop country. Rap country. It's all bad.
3) There is SO much great classic country music. From Hank through the sixties and seventies...
4) Outlaw country is AWESOME. From Waylon and Willie to Ray Wylie Hubbard and Guy Clark. More recently Jamey Johnson, Chris Stapleton (including the early Steeldrivers) and going back to Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, John Prine and Johnny Cash and Kristofferson and Jerry Jeff. Marty Robbins, and David Allan Freaking Coe.
5) Always keep an ear out for Townes Van Zandt, Billy Joe Shaver, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, and don't EVER forget about Merle.
6) Women...damn. Dolly. Emmylou. Linda Ronstadt. Reba. Tammy Wynette. Lucinda Williams. Elizabeth Cook. So many.
7) Yes. I've denied it in the past. But nevermore. Kacey Musgraves is awesome.
8 ) And if Alison Krauss would ever ask, yes. I'd marry her.
9) So much cool stuff on the outside looking in...Mandolin Orange. Sarah Shook & The Disarmers. Sierra Hull. Tyler Childers. Hayes Carll. Blaze Foley.
10) And Country Rock. So much, so good. Starting with Jason Isbell, one of the greatest songwriters of our time. Drive-By Truckers. Lucero. Whiskeytown. Ryan Adams. Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt & Wilco. Justin Townes Earle. Old Crow. And Skynyrd. The Allmans. Little Feat...
(I should have probably not done this while drinking...but that's pretty damned country as well)
There is so much good in country music to be heard if you stay away from what is mainstream right now. Stay tuned to this thread for more. _________________ May we all get to heaven

Thanks, Romanelli. Thanks, everyone. Lots of great recommendations. I was listening to an album of country covers (the Elvis Costello one), and just noticed how good the songwriting is, so wanted to check out some of the OG stuff. This gives me plenty to be getting on with.
I actually really like Marty Robbins' Gunslinger Ballads and Trail Songs. But I haven't heard any other outlaw country. Thanks for the recs there, especially.
Congrats to Beyonce on her Grammy history making accomplishment. Do however keep in mind that she dethroned by just one win a lady who is only judged on her music because its the only thing that she puts out there on display. In other words, she keeps her negative opinions, certain politics, and her boobs to herself.
God bless you and both ladies always!!!
Holly (a fan of Alison Krauss since 1994)
P.S. May Alison only add to her Grammy collection with this new superb and flawless duet.
