New Gibbs/Alchemist is pretty solid. Hoping to give it a few more listens this week.

I'd take a (confident) guess at pointing the finger at Doom, particularly with Madvillainy, but there's even a chance the influence could go all the way back to Kool Keith (as Dr. Octagon). This 'new wave' has really only popped up since Madvillainy, but it's unquestionably pre-Earl.
Either way, hope it continues.
The new Ka needs a lot more love than it's getting (and I'm not just talking about BEA). It's a seriously great record, and I'm surprised at the amount of publications shrugging it off as kinda average (or ignoring it completely).

It depends on how broadly the style is being defined. If it's being defined narrowly as music that sounds very similar to Some Rap Songs, the beginning of Earl's career precedes the style. _________________ Add me on RYM

If we're going narrow narrow, like slightly wonky/noisy instrumentals with dense lyrics... I suppose Skinny's probably right with Clouddead. Danny Brown's XXX might've pushed it a little in 2011 (ish). I'd give a lot of credit to Odd Future as a collective too.
(I also think the new Medhane is very good).

That new Ka album is ridiculously good. Dude went from being a feature artist for GZA and Marci to being the perfect amalgamation of the two who is pretty much surpassing both. One is not necessarily better than the other, but I get the feeling Ka could write like Marci if he really wanted, whereas the vice versa isn't true. That's the highest praise I can possibly offer, as can be backed up by those who know me. It doesn't mean I prefer him, but I think he's a super singular talent, and his new one is easily the year's best. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Bold of them to do the free download. In the queue, will post thoughts later.
EDIT: They kept that 2 Chainz verse?????
Final track's something special. Good on them.
