Naiv by Thy Catafalque
Released a few days ago. It's as diverse as avant-garde metal can get. Folk, electronic, atmospheric and not all that heavy. Most of it is instrumental, but the vocals are interesting too, although they aren't the selling point of the album obviously. Quite a good listen. _________________ Finally updated the overall chart
Not going to sugarcoat it, wasn't thrilled with January releases. I think there's some decent stuff in the mix, but I'm hoping near none of these stick my top 100 of the year come December.
Think my favourite 2020 release I've heard is this:
This is also with giving a spin. Little too short to be 'great', but it's pleasant enough. Ambient-pop with a smidge of electroacoustic (which, isn't too far off of Gryvul's record either).
And then there's this for all the indie rock/twee fans:
Which is a little rough around the edges, but there's heart.
Caetano Veloso & Ivan Sacerdote also put out a decent record. Same with Desire Marea.
Mixed on the new Bill Fay. Sadly, after a second listen, I don't think I like it very much. First thing I've heard by him that I don't think I care for. Wasn't too big on the new Oval release either. New Em is terrible. Mick Jenkins needed to give Circus another listen before putting it out. Jeff Parker almost hit the nail on the head but didn't. Heard at least ten other duds.

Yeah it was a VERY slow month. Haven't listened to Circles yet, and only those 2 releases that I've shared here (Lisa Gerrard doing Gorecki and Thy Catafalque) were interesting enough to get me excited. Kawir and Algiers were good too, but not that good. Gotta listen to Rezanejad, seems interesting. Thanks for sharing! _________________ Finally updated the overall chart
New Aesop! It's as solid as ever, I'm hoping for a new album, even though Malibu Ken was just last year. Bars are absolute fire, he's on top of his game.

Snotty nose, clogged pores, fork in his heart,
Back away or catch a halo made of orbiting stars" _________________ Finally updated the overall chart
This one flew under my radar last week given some of the other albums that came out, but this is easily the best new album I've heard this year. I likely a lot of things about Torres's last two albums but neither of them really clicked. This one puts all the pieces I liked together in the same package: great lyrics, cool guitar tunings, subtle synth backings. "Good Grief" is the first additional to my Best of 2020 playlist.
