Paul Simon

and Bob Dylan is taken already, so...

Lennon/McCartney (but possibly just John Lennon)... although Bob Dylan himself said this:
Quote:
"I'm in awe of McCartney," Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone in 2007. "He's about the only one that I'm in awe of."

And if I can nominate a 3rd... it'd be Jeffrey Lewis.

Will Toledo

(If Morrissey is disallowed due to The Smiths in the top 40 then replace him with Mark Oliver Everitt)

Would be good to clarify whether this is based on songs or lyrics. I took it to mean songs, but I'd be just as happy to have it be based on lyrics if that's what Bozo would prefer - it's his tournament after all. Might not even change my picks. But I would recommend changing the title to Best Lyricists just to avoid confusion. Either way, this is a cool idea, excited to see how it works.

Yeah, we'll stick with this being lyricists only. Mark Kozelek it is!

Sorry, no artists in the top 40. If we allowed Dylan and Lennon/McCartney it might be a bit obvious of an outcome.

No Top 40 artists, but John Lennon solo isn't in the top 40. He could be your nom as long as everyone factors ONLY his solo output into it.

Again, I'd be willing to allow Morrissey if we consider ONLY his solo output.
