Sorry, no artists in the top 40.

(If Morrissey is disallowed due to The Smiths in the top 40 then replace him with Mark Oliver Everitt) |
Again, I'd be willing to allow Morrissey if we consider ONLY his solo output. |
In that case disregard Morrissey, and I've changed my mind for my second nomination, so my two selections are now :-
Will Toledo
Billy Bragg

My first thought was Toledo, but he's taken, so:
James Murphy

Oh sorry, missed that bit then...
I'll do:
John Lennon (Post-Beatles) and Paul Simon.

In which case shouldn’t this thread be renamed ‘best lyricists’ rather than songwriters to avoid confusion?
Have changed my original choices as doubt songs sung in Portuguese resonate with many on a lyrical level... _________________ 'Reggae' & t'ing

Not a big Genesis fan, but they're far from the most mediocre entry in the BEA top 40.
I'd expect Björk (#41) to become the first female solo artist within the top 40 later this year. Long overdue. If I remember correctly the artist ranking was even more unbalanced before the algorithm change. _________________ Add me on RYM

Yeah that's crazy. Not wanting to derail, but curious as to which artists need to be booted?
A part of me seconds Jimmy's comment about lyricists, but then again I think why I chose my choices were for how their lyrics apply musically... meaning how they flow/cut musically. Probably the best lyricists aren't the best songwriters. Sorry splitting hairs. 80-99% agree.

Fair enough (and agreed), but it's a bizarrely high placement.
I expect they'll be out soon and replaced with Bjork or Nick Drake (who, somebody should nominate).

Well, if I made a list of 40 artists I'd guess around half would be replaced. To me the most egregious is Arctic Monkeys at #32. _________________ Add me on RYM
