Not a big Genesis fan, but they're far from the most mediocre entry in the BEA top 40.

I'd expect Björk (#41) to become the first female solo artist within the top 40 later this year. Long overdue. If I remember correctly the artist ranking was even more unbalanced before the algorithm change.

Yeah that's crazy. Not wanting to derail, but curious as to which artists need to be booted?

A part of me seconds Jimmy's comment about lyricists, but then again I think why I chose my choices were for how their lyrics apply musically... meaning how they flow/cut musically. Probably the best lyricists aren't the best songwriters. Sorry splitting hairs. 80-99% agree.

Surely this is everybody who has put nominations forward? Like, nobody's picked artists based on how their lyrics read from the page, right?

This is precisely why I haven't changed it to "Best Lyricists". Sure that's a primary focus, but we're not analyzing poets. We're discussing songwriters.

In my mind the lyrics are the main part, but the way they carry off those lyrics musically is definitely a consideration.

The next two nominations will bring us to 32 and we can begin.

Tempting to cheekily go with Bjork and Nick Drake (41 and 42 ranked artists)...

...but I actually want to nominate:

Kate Bush
Smokey Robinson

I did.

That was actually a pretty important part of why I made my choices.

Well, if I made a list of 40 artists I'd guess around half would be replaced. To me the most egregious is Arctic Monkeys at #32.

ugh... yeah I hear you. (Quick... I need to update my 2000s chart and get them off... gotta find something over an 80 song for song on an album that I like to replace them on my 66 spot... hehe. But no, they aren't great by any means. Half British clever and clever energetic pop, sure it ain't too bad...

But better than Aretha Franklin, good lord, no, half those artists aren't.
