|
It's tournament time! The rules are the same as last year, with a minor tweak to account for the new rating metrics.
1. Nominations can be any 2019 BEA-qualifying release that consists mostly of music released for the first time that year. I encourage you to nominate your favorite release.
2. Seeding is by BEA rank.
3. The bracket is randomized, except for play-ins, which narrow the tournament to 32 albums if necessary by matching the lowest seeds.
4. Closing times for each round are announced in advance. In the event of ties, the tiebreaker is rating, then trimmed mean, then mean. The final round and third place match use 24-hour extensions instead of a tiebreaker.
5. Medals are also awarded to the biggest rank gainers, so add discoveries you like to your charts before the tournament is over.
Here is the tournament spreadsheet.

I will start my recruitment efforts on June 1, but you can start nominating your choices now. I'll go with:

More Arriving by Sarathy Korwar
Are nominations capped at 1 or do we get a second entry?
EDIT: Might end up swapping out for Matana Roberts' latest if nobody else picks it.

2019 was oddly a pretty low output of a year for me. But if I was to choose a personal favorite from that year, I'd choose There Exists an Addiction To Blood by Clipping.

I know it's our #1 of 2019 so it's lame to nominate it, but it did make me cry and was genuinely my favorite release of 2019, so I'm gonna not feel bad for choosing the popular pick.

Stands alongside the great NYC rap albums of the early aughts, and contains some disarmingly great rapping from Jim'n'co. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
