OH, right. That 'major omission' I mentioned in the poll thread was Good Will Hunting. It wasn't in the top 100 until a day before the deadline Confused Kept floating around the 120-130 range.

Got a huge last-minute boost from a few lists though.

I haven't a clue what happened with the loss of love for that film. Glad it eventually landed.

Glad I could help.

It is a somewhat more serious list, if that's not too pretentious a way to put it. Couple comedies in the top 10 does it some good though. I was a little scared Schindler's List would be our #1 and make us look crazy bleak.

I don't think the list is too serious, there's a solid amount of comedies, comical dramas, animated films etc.
It is certainly a more serious list but I don't think it's a bad thing, even though I kinda miss the prominence of goofy comedies from the first list. Sure there are comedies in the V2 list but they're mostly the darker kind, or the kind merged with other genres. I'm not gonna lie, I was quite pleased five years ago when Dumb and Dumber, Office Space, and Dazed and Confused all made the Top 50. Nevertheless, the new list is much better. We couldn't have the influx of more diverse films without making sacrifices. Silly comedies and Disney movies seem like logical dropouts. And speaking of Disney movies...

Hayden wrote:
I think the Disney films dropped for the reason we mentioned. This entire revamp era might be digging into the reputation of the original films. Brings them down a notch or something. I knocked Beauty and The Beast down a few spots on my list myself— it usually floats about the top 20 but I figured it needed a slight reassessment.

Ghibli did well, and by all means 66% of Pixar's 90s output is on the board (which isn't too shabby), but interestingly the big Japanese animated film that didn't make the cut was Ghost In The Shell, which also suffered a poor remake recently. Revamps hurting the original title might be a real thing.
The more I think about it, the more I think it's true. I'm sure we have seen plenty of articles and social media/blog/forum posts in the past five years accusing Disney of "ruining people's childhoods."

Casey Affleck?

Same here. I don't think it's a masterpiece, but it's a Top 100 of the 90s imo.

Pffffffft.

Tell that to Kevin Spacey starring in four films in the top 50.

If we're going that route, could be Weinstein though.

At the end of the day I think people just left it off their lists.

Ha. Good points. I was spitballing and didn't think that one through. And no, since Spacey starred in that many Top 50 films, there's no way there was a conscious bias against Weinstein. I think you're right that people simply left GWH off their lists for whatever reasons.

Would that give us an excuse to shamelessly self-promote our student projects of the past? (Or of last week?)

Also, would Vines/Tik Toks count? Because so many of my favorite movies of the year are the latter

I had to google Tik Toks just to know what you're all talking about. Anyway I'm in favor of taking a break for a month or so, so I can start chipping away at my 2020 watchlist Smile . But if we must do another one right away, Europe or Asia gets my vote.
