That said, thanks for the recs on Neon Judgement and Front 242! I'm excited to check those out. If they're anything like Siouxie, Sisters of Mercy, or Ghlow, I'm sure I'll enjoy!
Of the other albums recommended here, I have a big queue
- Dry Cleaning
- Iglooghost
- La Femme
- GY!BE (if I get a chance this weekend)
Just popping back in to mention I've listened to all of these except Godspeed. the Dry Cleaning and Iglooghost albums didn't wow me, but they're both very incredible within their genres.
The La Femme album however, holy shit. That blew me away. Mostly synthpop but very genre bending with some psychedelia, rap, some funk, disco-ish jams, there's the bluegrass that Mercury mentioned earlier (though I'm pretty sure it's a banjo and not a fiddle?), one track which sounds like a swanky blend of Ennio Morricone and Knights of Cydonia, and ALL of it is incredible. I think more than anything the production crew of this album deserves a ton of credit for blending everything together seamlessly. I highly recommend this album to everyone, it's easily top 2 for 2021 so far (haven't decided if I'll put this, Nick Cave, or Pharaoh Sanders at #1, need to give it some time to germinate in my mind), and I wouldn't be surprised at all if this enters my all time top 100. Simply wonderful.
Oh and I also heard the two Belgian bands that dihansse mentioned, both were great, thanks for that! _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
Lol yeah I legit woke up from a dream where I realized I had made that error and then proceeded to not change the error. Lol. But super glad you lived the La Femme album. Look forward to listening to a couple more time tonight. _________________ -Ryan

Haha well you got the point across. And to be fair you were trying to avoid ruining the surprise so I WAS legit surprised when it was a different instrument than I was expecting lol
And yeah I've already listened 3-4 times since yesterday. Just a wonderful album
Listened to the Dry Cleaning album today and I must say I'm a little underwhelmed. Looks like that brand of modern post-punk unfortunately doesn't appeal to me that, even Shame's Drunk Tank Pink failed to really move me. Going back a couple of years, I also never really loved Joy As An Act Of Resistance as much as most of the folks here.
I did like Wide Awake! by Parquet Courts quite a bit though. _________________ All time
Indeed, post-punk seems to be everywhere right now, I have mixed feelings about its boom to be honest.
Regarding New Long Leg, I found it highly enjoyable. No matter how obvious some of the influences are - Joy Division, The Fall, Sonic Youth - they are super cool nonetheless.
I would actually rank it as about equal to For The First Time, which seems to be the post-punk album of the year so far. The former was more on the entertaining side, the latter more creative/challenging, but overall both were between good and very good.
Shame's one on the other hand was a distant third for me.
This was a lovely work from Dessner. I thought it was a great piece. Had you not mentioned it, it would be on my list below. No idea why the reaction has been so lukewarm.
Dessner, Gazelle Twin, and Iglooghost aside, some recent recs I'll throw out there—
Ancient Loyalties by Neil Richards
Australian dude. Folk songs spanning a 40-year period (which sounds like a lot, but it's 12 tracks). Has that raw musical quality I enjoy in this type of stuff. Feels like he's singing right there next to you.
Where One Begins And The Other Stops by Oh No Noh
And this is an interseting little project. Very dreamy digital floaty stuff that somehow almost sounds like a band playing. Nothing grand, but it's a solid easy listen.

Hand In Mine by Nebel Lang
Solo piano. There's a short intro and then two long tracks. The first is fantastic. The second is... good-ish... but could have been trimmed a fair bit. Worth giving a spin for the first half though. On the dreamier, slower side of Lubomyr Melnyk.

Nieguid Duovdagat by Ánnámáret
Finally, this has been sitting near the top of my year chart for about a month now, and I think it's going to stick around. "Sámi joik, archaic sound of the Finnish bowed lyre jouhikko and organic electronic music". Very unique, raw, excellently mixed and mastered, and the combinations of styles never feels out of place. Almost hypnotic. Thoroughly impressed with the project.
Really impressed with both of the new singles from Japanese Breakfast. Only complaint with this one is that it feels like it could keep going for another minute or two (which isn't something I say often, especially for a 4m+ pop track).
