I tried to explain to RoundTheBend that it was probably the biggest case of musical imperialism since Elvis, but he claimed that he was Apple’s fault and not U2’s.

Most haters of U2 I’ve talked to fall into one of two categories:
- can’t stand Bono
- don’t really know much about U2, but jumped on the bandwagon of hate to be one of the cool kids.
I’m sure there’s lots of valid reasons to hate U2, but these two categories are weak.
My point refers to the “can’t stand Bono” category. Most can’t articulate it, but that’s what I’m getting at - That idealism and hopeful disposition is the thing they can’t stand as a dark and brooding emo kid, or as an adult who finds it an unattractive match to their nihilistic embrace of a meaninglessness world.
It’s broad brush strokes, for sure, but I took a stab at it.
I think it’s a believability problem. What I’ve referred to as idealism or hopefulness, probably comes across as blind optimism to some. To me, it’s the juxtaposition of optimism slammed up against pessimism and the hard stuff of life that makes music vital. Good music always has a struggle in it. To the “can’t stand Bono” crowd, the very same stuff comes of as melodrama, with
Bono striking a Jesus Christ pose front and centre.
Another category may just not dig their sound. That’s cool.
I just think the scales have tipped too far in the wrong direction in appreciating U2. There’s lots of wealth to be found there, even in the later albums.

Likely not THE reason (possibly not even top 10), given most people hate U2 not based on their music.
Based on their music, it's possibly a top 10 reason.
But yeah, lol, cuz it's not the most egregious reason for sure.

Number one reason I hear people hate U2: Bono, and of that group only 80% initially state it's because of his singing or lyrics, rather they hate him as a person.
Mind you, Joshua Tree will likely forever take my #1 spot. If not because of the music, at least 5% of it is to frustrate the Pitchfork thinks for me group.

I think that group is pretty small these days, smaller than Fantano devotees. Also, they gave Joshua Tree an 8.9, so anyone in that group would likely approve of your #1. _________________ Add me on RYM

I politely disagree. A true pitchfork monkey wouldn't. They'd be asking why Prince or Radiohead wasn't, and likely would either expect it at my 80th or wouldn't even notice if it was missing. 8.9 isn't Pitchfork-god worthy.
You are correct that if Pitchfork said it was "good" then it should be treated as such by Pitchfork monkeys, but in my experience the common Pitchfork reader is not a U2 fan/often anti-U2 and often says, yeah, I guess it's ok because Pitchfork gave it a pretty good rating. They might even put it as #80 on their top 100 even though they have only heard it a couple of times and possibly nothing else by the group. I suppose I'm being a turd by giving such a generality/prejudice. I just don't know anyone born after 1990ish? who respects the band (another generality that of course can be proven not true... just my personal experience/true enough to state it).
I had to google Fantano and why he lost his popularity... hehe. Sorry just being honest. Didn't really pay attention to him or really any critic. Just commenting on how 9x out of ten most people comment on how Bono is a turd. But have not a lot to say about the music.
