I think Dave Chapelle has always been great but his Netflix specials have really solidified himself as one of the greatest of all time

Mike Birbiglia hits the exact balance I love between comedy and tragedy. The way he essentially builds an entire standup routine out of a traumatic experience, and goes off on brief tangents that seem unrelated but contribute to the overall idea, it's just perfect.

John Mulaney is a close second for me

Josh Johnson is, in my opinion, the most underrated comedian working currently, and everyone should absolutely give him a go

And the obligatory Jim Gaffigan mention (I choose this one as I am generally ambivalent towards holidays)

indeed - but that 90s gig he did in DC is incredible too. Oddly enough I never saw the Chapelle show (I've had this aversion to cable tv my whole life).

I'm still recovering from jesus' birthday! haha

Although gaffigan's audience is the whitest I've ever seen. I love his "uncomfortable" voice.

Thanks for sharing Josh Johnson - his timing is great.

The funniest people in my life have always been women.

I'm more in the mood these days for Jen Kirkman. Not a lot of video from her stand up...but there is this audio. She has a pair of really good specials on Netflix right now. (Female stand ups don't get a lot of love, here or anywhere else. They deserve better.)

I don't see the logic behind criticizing what the audience happens to look like in the brief snippets we see of a handful of his shows.

For the record, the people who introduced me to Gaffigan were Hispanic.

I suppose criticizing and noticing are two different things. That is as much an editing thing than anything else. It's just something I noticed. Like most other comedy specials where they have those laughing people zoom in's, it's just since the 90s typically a more diverse zoom in group of people. Laughing

It's also a choice of what city it was recorded in.

So yeah just an observation.
