Also Hayden your review praising the music and architecture sold it enough for me. Perhaps I can be a movie simpleton, but I've come to realize that those are the two things I value most in a movie. Which is why I love Star Wars, La La Land, Inception, or even something like Inside where architecture is not the focus but is paramount. The original Blade Runner is usually THE movie cited when discussing architecture in film, and I did love that. So I should definitely see the sequel. |
Villeneuve is a two-sided coin. He has his grittier repertoire of Sicario, Prisoners and Incendies (which, despite being lesser discussed, is actually his top-rated on IMDb and Letterboxd, by a lot), and then there's his sci-fi work like Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Dune, and Enemy (which, in retrospect, has an indie-vibe). Before all of that he also had a film about the school shooting at Polytechnique, which is a devastating capturing of the events, and he also has an early film called Maelstrom that features a strong lead performance Marie-Josée Croze. It's a stellar filmography. If there was any justice, he'd have an Oscar by now.
Happy watching  Glad you enjoyed Next Floor. That one's another Oscar snub. It's a little on the nose, but it's the perfect example of an effective short. And Blade Runner 2049 was underappreciated the moment it came out. It's one of the most breathtaking films of this century. Hoping you like that one too.
Once again, he is a directer whose films deserve the largest screen possible.

Oh that makes sense, if you're not into sci-fi that much it's obvious how Dune's script could look silly and/or weak. I am generally a sci-fi fan, and I too did have a few quibbles in regard to storytelling and the way some characters arcs are done. However, if this is only an "incomplete" part 1 and I love it so much, I can only begin to imagine how great it'll be to watch the 2 parts together. Preferably extended cuts if we're lucky

That's what I tell myself everytime I feel largely meh when watching a classic which, in theory, I should love (khm Chungking Express). The truth is, I'm just a film normie

That for all of Wong's films, or just Chungking Express? I can't pick a favourite by him, I have a three-way tie, but it'd certainly be one of them. I'm hoping if Wong Kar-Wai gets an honorary Oscar or Palme D'or it's shared with Christopher Doyle... that lens changed how I thought of cinema (and, honestly, Hong Kong, which sadly I'm positive will never be the same...).
I watched the new restorations of Days of Being Wild and In The Mood For Love and I think the controversy is a bunch of nonsense. They looked fantastic (particularly Days of Being Wild). Hoping to get a copy of Fallen Angels sometime soon.
Once again, all good though. There's classics I don't like either. If we were all the same, it'd be boring.

Well In the Mood For Love is one of my favourite movies of the 00s (and of all time tbh), while I think both Chungking Express and Fallen Angels are good, but nothing else. Incredible camera work like you said, very impressive from a cinematography standpoint, but that's about it. The enigmatic story, even the usage of California Dreamin' is just okay. And it's far from the only artsy or avantgarde classic which I think is excellent visually, technically, full of great symbolism etc. but doesn't move me otherwise. Sometimes I catch myself in no-man's land, thinking "this is stunning on all levels and it deserves 4 or 4.5 on LB, but I didn't really enjoy it". Doesn't help that my attention span is 5 minutes But then again, I love Minari, Burning, Days of Heaven, In the Mood for Love, Lost in Translation and a bunch of other slower movies.

That's how I feel about The Night of The Hunter. One of the best looking films of the 50s. Excellent example of how to style a noir. Legit think it's a kinda bad film though.
Think the most controversial thing you said there is that Lost In Translation is a slow film. Maybe it's because I've seen it too many times, but it always flies by for me. It was even one of my go-to comfort rewatches early in the pandemic.
Reassuring you like In The Mood For Love though. That one just keeps getting better and better.

These are all majestic films, which simply seeing the names of warms my heart.
I'd highly recommend L'Eclisse and Yi Yi if you haven't seen those yet.

Got around to the VOD last night. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Seydoux's an absolute scene-stealer every single time. Ana de Armas's (somewhat obviously last-minute tacked on) bit was a blast too. Thought Fukunaga's direction was a perfect fit.
Craig's Bond rankings (and, surprisingly, I'm actually quite confident in the order, barring a razor-thin margin between #2/3)—
1. Skyfall
2. Casino Royale
3. No Time To Die
(notable quality gap)
4. Spectre
5. Quantum of Solace
I was a fan of the long runtime. Thought it merited the length. I'll probably give it another watch on the weekend.

I've seen NTTD eight times now (I kept getting invited to it by various friends and whatnot) and I have to say, from about my fourth viewing onwards it inexplicably did the impossible and overtook Casino Royale as my favourite Bond film; it now sits in my all-time top 20. I feel pretty confidently in saying I literally love this movie more than anyone else on the planet currently does hahahaha

Really loved Spencer. Seen it twice now. Stewart is my choice for the Oscar. Greenwood too. I can't see it leaving my top 5 of the year. As an Ontarian, the final shot is a little perplexing, but otherwise. Looking forward to whoever gets the Larraín treatment next.
And they didn't land the best reviews, but I also really liked The Electrical Life of Louis Wain and Last Night in Soho. Easy rec for all three, even in a row if you want. Brit-fest and all that.
