Magic Mirror by Pearl Charles

Available on multiple streaming platforms.

Sounds Like: Nashville Sound with modern conventions and some ABBA-like Disco florishes
Origin: United States

Since Outlaw has not logged on and posted his thread for 48 hours as I warned of in the past, I will put this interim thread up in its place. I have been severely physically ill in the last month, but I have been recovering. Not COVID but other issues, so don't worry about me too much.

Still setting comfortably in the top records of the year three months in, Magic Mirror was a splendid surprise for me. Pearl’s sophomore effort highlights her strengths as a songwriter that harkens back to the cosmopolitan country sound of the 1970s, a qualifier of the well-regarded Nashville Sound. With glossy ABBA-esque melodies and a lush production it resonates as a sort of comfort food. For old school country fans looking for more of this revival sound that has made popular by the likes of Honey Harper, Daniel Romano, and Colter Wall this definitely hits a spot. Though this might be closer to those early Romano albums than Harper or Wall as a note to those familiar.
Pearl Charles, ‘Slipping Away’ wrote:
A picture is worth a thousand words
I heard inside a painting
Looking back, you trace the path
Till you find your destination
There was nothing we could do

It’s a great record with superb songwriting. Curious to some other thoughts as I catch up with the rest of the ALC projects posted in my absence.

I've seen this one floating around for a bit now. Cover vaguely reminds me of 70s MPB. May as well give it a spin. Smile

Yeah in the early days of 2021 this was one of my big surprises as well. Really like it. Will listen again but it’s just a pristine pop album with some incredible hooks and melodies and it’s just so good.

Ditto this, cover reminds me a lot of Gal Costa's (first) self-titled album. Maybe Astrud Gilberto as well (though both 60s rather than 70s). Will be giving it a listen shortly!

I listened to this a few weeks back, should've added it to my year chart by now. Lovely vibes, if a bit derivative. Will relisten and return with thoughts.

First 20 seconds - this sounds like ABBA.

3 minutes in - some kind of pop bliss akin a little to what I liked about Bedouin. (I don't care about your more accurate descriptors)

Album over I thought I was going to say it had a nice start but got boring over time - little too samey samey, but ended up not being the case. Each track had intriguing subtleties.

Nice impromptu on no sleep. Better than anything I'll suggest.

I remember not really liking the type of music like the title track. This time I tried harder, but it was still my least favorite on the record. Otherwise I dug a lot. Felt a bit of a Beatles vibe every so often. Like Take Your Time reminds me a bit of said artist group people.

After a second listen, it's very pleasant the whole way through. Agreed that it's derivative and not too much original substance, but I don't even mind since it was such an enjoyable listen.

I think Charles' songwriting is solid, clearly drawing similar influences as Kacey Musgraves (pop-country of the 70s) but taking them in a different direction. "Sweet Sunshine Wine" and "Impostor" feel like highlights for me, although the album flows so well that I'm almost inclined not to pick out highlights.

Enjoyed this one much, much more than I thought I would. The opener was an odd one in the mix, but it is definitely a highlight for me. The whole thing was very solid though, not a bad song in sight. Maybe a bit derivative, but I'm not well versed in pop country so it didn't bother me as much. The rich Countrypolitan sound was incredible and it's such a well produced and mixed album. IDK maybe I'm overreacting because I don't often hear a good country album (or rather I don't often hear a country album period), but this is top 15 candidate for now.
