I'm usually first in line to rave about the Dan, but I could just never warm up to this album. Maybe better than the average album, but still well at the bottom of the Dan pile for me.

Other than ‘Hey Nineteen’ being literally the best song ever made, actual liquid chrome, the sound of fine Colombian, this is not one of their best. But it has ‘Hey Nineteen’ on it. Actual ‘Hey Nineteen’. The sound of a million lines. I really love ‘Hey Nineteen’. It’s the curviest song ever made. It’s all round edges. I don’t understand the logistics. Put it on anywhere and I’m yours though.

I think it is sonically the most impressive pop song ever made. How did they make it sound so clean? Nothing else ever recorded lies at that perfect midpoint between organic and synthetic. Me and a mate did a load of shrooms once and just marvelled at it on repeat for hours. It poured out of the speakers like mercury. The shit is unreal. It actually frightens me a little.

Yes it's a super clean sound on all the album, almost inhuman. The following one (Donald Fagen's The Nightfly) has the same clean sound but it's so much more personal and warm (actualy autobiographical). It makes a big difference.

Yeah this was one of the more Yacht-Rock-y releases, definitely not top-tier 'cuz the songs here just kind of revolve and zag and Steely Dan are at their best when their tracks feel constantly mutating, but can't deny it's got a comforting atmosphere and very much of it's time.

The Nightfly is incredible, probably as good as any actual Dan album, although I love Aja and Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic almost equally, with Countdown to Ecstasy and Can’t Buy a Thrill not far behind. This and The Royal Scam are the only two I don’t love wholeheartedly, and even then they have insane moments.

I listened to Hey Nineteen today for first time and it was great song Smile I recall they do have some great albums before 1980 too
