albummaster wrote: | Lonesome Dove is an amazing book. A bit of a slow burner, but after a while you can't put it down. Not read the other books in the series yet, but on my list. Re-read Dune recently (one of my favs), but another book where I haven't read the rest of the series (also watched the movie not so long ago and really enjoyed it - excited for part two). |
Yeah, exactly how I felt on it, took a minute to get going but then you're sucked in and I couldn't put it down, naturally finished it at this point and have a few other books on the go.
Read the entirety of Dune alright actually, but by the last few books I was a bit all over the place admittedly and it gets real heavy. Really enjoyed the movie too! _________________

I read Sapians, it was really good. I’ve got Homo Deus lined up for next year.

first read through? Those were big for me as they were releasing.
As for me, now I am reading some of Brandon Sanderson's so-called cosmere universe stuff. Currently on Shadows of Self. That's for audiobook reading. On physical copies I am reading 12 Who Ruled by R.R. Palmer about the french revolution, specifically the so-called reign of terror. Fascinating. Just completed Malice's The White Pill and it was quite good as well. That one pulled me away a bit from the edge of the chasm of the "Black Pill" cynical worldview. Of course, 12 Who Ruled and Civilians and reading up on the more grisly aspects of the french revolution is threatening to push right back up against that void again lol. _________________ -Ryan

amen on this phenomenon. Personally, I give more credence and trust in his accounts than most historians it seems. and I tend to "trust" in ancient or early modern sources more than some or many historians I've read who seem to have, like you said, a confused and addled relationship with ancient sources. _________________ -Ryan

Yeah, first read. I thought myself too cool for Hogwarts when they first came out. I was so wrong.

Common for our age group. "Stupid kids books" was kinda the initial response if you were mid-teens or older when they came out.
And yes, I'm glad my wife was a totally HP nerd and got me into it about a decade later like before about half the movies or so started coming out, so it was fun to read and then go watch for the last 5 movies or something.
Not a fan, tbh, of the new stuff though. But that initial series is gold/Tolkien level good, imo. She grafts so many linguistic and historical stuff into the books like he did... it's great.

First Harry Potter book came out when I was in 6th or 7th grade. I thought myself above them. I was right.
But I was also reading way above my reading level and was a little too smug about it at the time. I stuck to my Three Musketeers and such while kids talked about Harry Potter. In retrospect, JKR coming out as a Thatcherite conservative and transphobic bigot just makes me giggle. Gives me more validation.
