I’m milking my kickass age of 42 ( the answer to everything) as long as I possibly can ….BUT , it doesn’t mean I’m not up for discovering new bands!
Really hoping to find some new punk AND funk enjoyment. I’m on a Manu Dibango kick at the mo…. ( RIP Manu who died in 2020). I also love desert rock/ African Mali stuff. But sure, I dig a WIDE range of stuff. On of my fave albums this year is “Long Lost” by Lord Huron…it’s got that 50’s rockabillyish vibe mixed with wanna-be Fleet Foxes sounds. Here’s some random music choices of mine.

* What I listen to loudly with my windows down when I’m trying to annoy people in rural areas:
Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa ( special mention: FDT - Nipsey Hussle )

*The Song I play ( and dance to) when I wanna embarrass everyone around me:
David Bowie- Magic Dance

*The song that instantly soothes me no matter what mood I’m in :
The Jam - That’s Entertainment

*The song that everyone should have in at least one of their playlists:
Amadou & Miriam - Senegal Fast Food (Special Mention: Charlotte Gainsbourg - Deadly Valentine)

*What I obsessively listen to when I’m a little low key Indica stoned:
Father John Misty - Real Love Baby ( Special Mention: Real Estate - Beach Comber)

*What I obsessively listen to when I’m a little high energy Sativa stoned:
Empire of The Sun - Concert Pitch ( special mention: The Jam - Going Underground)

*The Most Hilarious Song You’ve Never Heard :
Eddie Rabbit - Tullohoma Pizza Man (special mention: Flight Of The Conchords - If you’re into it)

*My all-time fave song as a kid but is also still probably still my fave even though I’ll admit it to no one:
Moody Blues - Your Wildest Dreams ( special mention: Billy Idol - Mony Mony)

*A song I absolutely love because the bassline is the most AMAZING of all time:
Beta Band - Dry The Rain ( special mention: Fruitbats - The Balcony )

*The Song I put on when mom is with me in my car:
Great Lake Swimmers - Pulling on a Line ( special mention: Elo- anything ELO …..)

*A Song I’m surprised to actually love when it’s not really my style:
Fever Dolls - All The Best Debts ( special mention: Lizzo - Juice )

*That song you forgot you loved that you re-heard recently:
Beastie Boys - Sabatoge (special mention: Cornershop - Brimful of Asha)

*The random hella good 70’s song you didn’t realize existed:
Brian Protheroe - Pinball ( special mention : Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster )

*Why The Cure is one of the top ten best bands of all time:
The Cure - Lullaby ( special mention : The Cure - A letter to Elise )

*The Songs that got me through my “ backing through Europe before I turn 30” trip:
Midlake - Roscoe ( Special Mention: Maximo Park - Our Velocity)

*Songs I loved at 18 and still fucking love now:
The Presidents Of The United States of America - Peaches ( Special Mention: Everclear - Santa Monica)

*Best Cover Songs That “MIGHT” even be better than the original:
Greensky BlueGrass - Time ( special mention: Youth Group - Forever Young )

*Best Nerdy Sci-Fi Song:
Pogo - Data & Picard ( special mention: Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity)

*Why I love Funk:
Manu Dibango - Hot Chicken ( Special Mention: Sinkane - Runnin’)

*Why I love Punk:
Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love ( Special Mention: Pixies - Subbacultcha)

And finally….* The Songs I listen to the most according to my playlist counts*
Junip - Line of Fire ( 2nd most: Empire of the Sun - Two Vines)

Oh and I’m a Geologist by day and absolute lazy arse by night. I have a Beagle named Moogie. Jean Luc Picard is the sexiest fictional character of all time ( and Sir Pat Stew is my slightly creepy for I guess ageist reasons , celebrity crush ) I’ve suddenly discovered a craving for grapefruit juice ( no I’m not pregnant) but holy hell, where has grapejuice been all my life? But why is just, grapefruit…the fruit itself….still so gross? It makes no sense! Explain yourself grapefruit!

Welcome!

Not Malian but West African desert blues has had a solid few years recently.

Afelan by Mdou Moctar

At Pioneer Works by Les Filles De Illighadad
These are both live, some of my favorite recent stuff.

Hehe, the POTU are a pretty underrated 90’s band everyone forgets about! …..and why isn’t Magic Dance a hit at Karaoke places??! When I lived in the UK from 1998-2000 ( in Salisbury), some friends and I and my ex used to go to a shitton of pubs that had Karaoke and it was always ABBA, Robbie Williams, and UB40 stuff, but no magic dance! Boo!

Nice! I’m def gonna check those out. Tinariwen is one of my fave Desert Blues bands, but it’s hard to find a lot of others on Spotify. I feel like there’s gotta be a better music app for a broader range of stuff but I’m so outta the loop on newer music streamers.

Sweet! Did you leave the field for something else in the Geosciences? Don’t you love how friends and people you meet think you should know what every single damn rock is….I swear people come up and hand me some random rock going “So what kind is this?” and when I don’t instantly know for sure and give them a few options of what it could be , they’re like “but, don’t you know what every rock is?” Hehehe, it’s like asking an astrophysicist to name every known constellation 🤣

Kinda just fell into environmental engineering I guess and never really looked back, personally enjoy it much more than geology nowadays and don't regret it one bit, work a lot on the flood side of things (a common occurrence where I'm from...), I still get that alright haha, like to think I'm good with it but admittedly I'm a tad rusty at this point, fairly solid on igneous stuff but beyond that it can be a lottery from time to time...
