I read an interview recently that summed it up well. Todd Rundgren said:

“They made the mistake of not calling it the Pop Music Hall of Fame."

And he has little use for the “mystery cabal,” as he calls it, that oversees the induction process.

I do have a tendency to agree. I mean, it would make more sense, and cover more ground, if they had just called it that. Any ideas?

I love Todd Rundgren, and I can't agree more with him here. It should be renamed to the pop music hof at the least.

I just created my own right here in Chicago in my basement!

2021 Inductees are...

1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Joan Baez
4. Led Zeppelin
5. Bo Didley

(open for discussion of course...)

I am the mystery cabal of this outfit. Accepting donations NOW which will fund a listening room and a kegarator. All BEA members are free to drop in. Also the hours will be quite different than Cleveland's. Twisted Evil

I've been thinking for quite a while now that they should change the name to the Pop Music Hall of Fame, or just the Music Hall. Then, start a brand new hall dedicated completely to rock music.

I have no use for the Hall. Just another awards show and opportunity for famous people to be seen on TV. It could burn to the ground and I wouldn't care at all.

IMO.

Figuratively, I agree with you. Literally, it's a quite impressive building designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, so I think it'd be a loss for the building to burn down.

While the hall of fame itself and the whole process behind the induction into the hall is stupid, I should remind that the institution is also a pretty incredible museum, and for all the bullshit music industry patting itself on the back, they do a pretty good job of cataloging information and making it available in exhibits.

The Smithsonian (who produces Folkways) and Library of Congress arguably do a much better job of this, though the information is typically less accessible to the general public.

As a final note, if the HoF were in NY or LA I think I'd consider it significantly more self-congratulatory for the music industry. But it's based in Cleveland and it's a neat little tourist draw for a city that quite frankly doesn't have much going for it since Lebron James left (sorry Cleveland, I visited there once and I had a wonderful time). Not quite Baseball HoF in Cooperstown status (I mean why the hell would you go to Cooperstown otherwise), but it's something cool that Cleveland has going for it.
