Ah - the era the big bands released honest work and everyone hated them for it.

In hindsight, it was really good work from the band, as were many of these types of releases from the big alternative bands.

What other examples of this trend do you know? I'm curious because I quite like this record.

Well - the trend is "big alternative bands" and this "era" being late 90s. And while the albums don't sound anything alike, I do feel like they all took a more reserved/darker than usual approach.

Up or even New Adventures in Hi-Fi by REM
Pop by U2

Those albums - at release were kinda other WTF moments for otherwise pretty big/popular bands. Just like this feeling like a downward turn for the pumpkins.
