This is Callahan's best in years— and it's not like his last few records have been shoddy. Gorgeous album. Innovative, passionate, poetic, minimalistic yet full— and his voice just keeps getting better. It's a very complete record— thought through, well-composed— it's like a... slightly dusty twine-wrapped package— and an absolute joy to hear. A-side is full of highlights. A lot of the unconventional instrumentations suit him perfectly. To have this sort of highlight this far into his career is fantastic. Top 10 of the year for me.
If somehow you've at some point in your life had an even passing interest in Julian Cope, I think you should know that this year's England Expectorates is actually very good and his best in years. Long story short: the old man is angry, he's still fun as hell, and he can still write songs and irresistible one-liners.
