The finale ride for the David Lee Roth era of Van Halen. I actually consider this album to be one of the weaker records of that era although it was among the best selling. It probably doesn't help that the 3 huge singles are enormously overplayed. There are some fun tracks in the deep cuts.

For me, Van Halen is a band whose bigger hits (while mostly good songs) never seem close to the most interesting material. I could really take or leave Panama and I’ll Wait (Ain’t Talkin Bout Love for example too) and it’s been that way pretty consistently for me.

When I return to this record it’s really always songs like Drop Dead Legs and House of Pain that catch my ear the most. Van Halen had a true identity in thick, powerful grooves (Drop Dead Legs) and they always knew how to throw in something interesting and signature. Lead runs, passages of odd time, etc.

Never been crazy about 1984 but I don’t mind returning to it every now and again.
