Hi, I wasnt bothering to check, but wondering how far down the list on this site you have to go to find an artist who doesn't write their own songs. I think Rolling Stone had Elvis quite high, though this might have changed. More importantly, why do you think the combination of great singer + other talented songwriters doesnt work well for creating great albums?

I've never thought that. If I like a song or album, it doesn't matter at all to me whether the singer wrote the songs or not.

I guess there is often a view that self-penned songs are more authentic or personal. For me, I don’t mind who wrote the songs though and this is reflected in some of my all time favourites:

Dusty Springfield- Dusty in Memphis
Bonnie Tyler - Faster than the Speed of Night
Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music

Also, any good Motown comp works for me.

Historically, artists have gained creative freedom (from studios) by writing their own songs. Notably the Beatles and Dylan did this and effected a sea change. I’d say the perception that this is what “true artists” do follows from this era as well. Though it’s kind of a one-sided and rockist view for me.
