Watched Ferris Bueller the other day and... it's even worse than Breakfast Club, a movie whose second half is just not very good. And I usually like free spirit teenage movies like these. I can see the appeal, but it wasn't funny to me personally. The performances are mid at best, the story goes off the rails and the ending is bad. Endings for all characters are unbelievable, the Ferris Bueller one, his sister and, the worst of all, Cameron. That dude gets bullied by his supposed best friend, takes the blame for it and now we're supposed to think he's grown as a character because he sticks it to the man? IDK, again, I can see why someone would think it's a classic, but it disappointed me immensely.

On the other hand, I've rewatched Blue Velvet and concluded that it's the best Lynch movie I've seen. It has just as much to say as Mulholland Drive, while being more straightforward and enjoyable (not that I dislike the weirdness of Mulholland Drive, it's incredible, but this one managed to do more with less). A dissection of society, madness, desire, sexuality all wrapped up in a nice noir package. Dark, beautiful soundtrack.

I will not stand for any Jennifer Grey slander. Shame on you

List is coming along nicely. I've got some more to watch which will probably round out the list. Or at least I'm hoping that they do.

There are many 80s movies which I completely fail to see the appeal of. Ferris Bueller is one of them.

Sorry. Trying to post mostly positive thoughts about our matchup but sometimes just gotta vent.

Yeah, I personally really connect to The Breakfast Club, but I definitely understand why he's no longer a critical darling. I wonder if 20 years from now Home Alone will be his unanimous masterwork.

No offense meant Laughing She probably had the best performance of the bunch now that I think of it. A good movie which just didn't appeal to me, what can I say. I'll try to write more positive stuff in this thread Smile For example, Burton's Batman still holds up and Top Secret! is one of the best comedies of the 80s, possibly better than Airplane (both are great and I knew Chief would have them on the list as his comedy resume is impeccable).

Some sad news— Alejandro Jodorowsky's son Axel (aka Cristóbal) passed away yesterday. He starred in Santa Sangre alongside his brother.

For some reason it doesn't seem to be as popular of a film as The Holy Mountain or El Topo, but I genuinely believe it's better than both. Hoping people give it a shot before the poll closes.

I used to love Ferris Bueller but I also had somewhat of a falling out with the movie when I last watched it about 6-7 years ago. I think my perspective was key. Watching it between the ages of about 10-17, Ferris was kind of a role model. He was a cool charming high school senior with a hot girlfriend and loving parents. He could do anything he wanted and get away with it. It was fun to watch. What was not to like? But then, watching it as 20-something, and being older than Ferris's character and having some real-world adult experience, I couldn't help but ask myself "What kind of entitled douchebag is this kid?" The line that got me was during the scene when he was hacking the school's system and adjusting his attendance record, when he turned and broke the 4th wall and said "I asked for a car, and I got a computer, how's that for being born under a bad sign?" Does he mean he feels he was born under a bad sign, because he got computer as a gift from his wealthy parents instead of a car? Or was he being sarcastic with us, knowing he was born under a good sign, as he uses the 2nd best gift an 80s kid could receive to re-write his attendance record allowing him to graduate? Either way, it's a cringey line that smears his upper class upbringing upon us. Which was easy to turn a blind eye to as pre-teen and teen watching this film, as we may not be as socially conscious of class stratifications at that age. But seeing the movie as adult, it stood out like a sore thumb to me, and made his character more difficult to like. This is not to say there isn't humor and fun times in the film. His phone calls to kids at the school while he's feigning illness, his pranks on Principal Rooney, and his parade performance are enjoyable enough. But the film went down in my estimation, while The Breakfast Club stood up well the last time I saw it. Of course that's been many years too, but I do recall the movie took a broader look into 80s high school life, by examining several different types of high-school teens, and acknowledging that some kids have it much easier than others, an element that was mostly absent from Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
