Below is a list of artists that are on the Top Ranked Bands section of the website that are currently making music. I don't know every single band on the list, so if I missed one, it was because I didn't think they were worth confirming to see if they are still making music.

Who's not on the list that should make up the rest of this list because bands of the past didn't make room for them?

In doing this I learned what our musical culture could be like without the greats of the past. We talk about how we are sometimes stuck in the past- that we can't get passed the greats of the passed. Some Freudian theorists try to compare the Oedipus complex with art in that instead of becoming like the father, killing the father to possess the mother, it is becoming like the great artists of the past, and then "kill" them and possess the muse that they had. Interesting concept. Have these bands done that, or are they still hiding behind their "fathers?'

1. Radiohead

66. Built to Spill
67. The xx
68. Guided by Voices
69. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
70. Boards of Canada
71. The Prodigy

People I left off the list because I feel their time has passed and will probably make music till they die, but doesn't mean they aren't good musicians: Paul Simon, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Neil Young, Kate Bush, Brian Eno, Paul McCartney, Tori Amos, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, Tom Petty, Dr. Dre

I would add Elbow, As Tall As Lions, and Thrice to this list at first glance. Haven't really thought that much about it yet and analyzing who is there, and who isn't, but that is what this post is for.

Paul Simon and Lou Reed both just finished albums within months and are in my opinion still very relevant. Rolling Stone called "So Beautiful Or So What" the 3rd best album of the year.

Paul Simon is by far one of my favorite artists, but he is definitely one of the fathers. All of those artists that I put a caveat for are still releasing music, and if you are a fan of theirs you will most likely like it. It's just that they will make music till they die and aren't really in the musical discourse anymore. Paul Simon might as well be the 6th Beatle, next to George Martin of course.

I still feel he's relevant and should be on the list. Who's to say his time has past?

ok he could be on the list, but I think all of those artists should be then. That part of course is subjective, but the point I am making is they are all the "fathers" of music. All of them have already been put up as the greats. I almost took of Bands like R.E.M., U2 and Red Hot Chili Peppers, because they are almost fathers themselves, being the pioneers of their Genre's. The rest of the groups I think are still forming their histories.

By "current" do we mean to address "relevant" ? Because, sure "ac/dc" put out an album recently, but are they at their peak artistically or running on fumes? And what about a "band" like the smashing pumpkins who are basically a one-man band? How about Sonic Youth which may not even survive a divorce? Or R.E.M. and white stripes which are kapputs?

So in my opinion, i think that list needs to be trimmed. in the top 20 alone, i'd only keep

radiohead
arcade fire
coldplay
muse
strokes
flaming lips
sigur ros
arctic monkeys
wilco

Thank you Paladisiac.

It is kind of hard to clip out who- Sonic Youth and ac/dc probably should've been cut and R.E.M. put out an album this year that had a decent amount of critical acclaim, white stripes should probably just change to Jack White. I am sure that there are more depending on your opinions.

Any you would care to add to the list?

How is Bon Iver so high?

Better question: how is Bon Iver on this list?
