Is it wrong to think that the Shins have many elements of what the Beach Boys had. Not saying they ripped them off, but with their vocals and guitars, have very similar tone/sound? Some people call me crazy and others agree. What do you think?

I think you'd be hard pressed to find much american 'indie' music that emerged in the 00's that doesn't sound like it was heavily influenced by The Beach Boys. So...I voted...yes.

I don't really understand the poll. I voted 'yes' for the sake of it, but your example proves your point.

Well, I wouldn't say The Beach Boys are their number one influence, but yeah, there are certainly elements of the Beach Boys in their sound. I hear a lot of Kinks, Zombies, and early R.E.M. in their sound as well. Yeah, the Shins have always sounded kind of familiar to me, but they were never one of those groups that sounded derivative of a specific group to me. I do think their first album sounds like it was released in the mid 60's though. Maybe that's because it was done on an eight track. Think

I've also heard that James Mercer is a big Belle and Sebastian fan although I wouldn't compare the two bands.

Lyrically, I think they're so similar in terms of the imagery they commonly use and even musically I think they both have this timeless quality to them.

As previously stated, I think the majority of Oh, Inverted World! sounds more like The Who Sell Out...

Oh, Inverted World clearly has a heavy Beach Boys influence (Girl Inform Me is the most telling example I think). But I don't think the influence is nearly as evident with either Chutes Too Narrow or Wincing The Night Away, although I guess it might still be there to an extent.

Either way, one of the things that makes me love the Shins so much is that their sound has developed siginificantly with each album. I'm really hoping Port Of Morrow keeps the trend going. I hate when bands stagnate and reproduce the same album over and over.

Oh, yeah! I could definitely see that comparison. I'll have to play those back to back sometime.
