PET SOUNDS

Some people just don't get it... "Whats the big deal with PET SOUNDS ?... Why is it so highly rated?"
For those who regard this album as overrated ... I must disagree.

Recognized as one of the most influential records in the history of popular music and one of the best albums of the 1960's. But why?

It changed pop music.

The musically landscape would never be the same.
Kind of the same thing that "Citizen Kane " did for film, "Pet Sounds" did for music.

"Pet Sounds" was an evolutionary masterpiece in which Brian Wilson reached a whole new level in terms of both composition, arrangement and production. This emotionally powerful album contains elaborate layers of lush vocal harmonies with stunning melodies, extravagant orchestration, unorthodox instrumentation (bicycle bells, harpsichords, Electro-Theremin, dog whistles, trains, Coca-Cola cans and barking dogs) , elaborate instrumentation and technological advances in recording that set a new standard for musical creativity.

The Beatles expressed it was a considerable influence on "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
In fact Beatles producer George Martin said "Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds"

Paul McCartney stated that:

“ It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. I love the album so much. I've just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life ... I figure no one is educated musically 'til they've heard that album ... I love the orchestra, the arrangements ... it may be going overboard to say it's the classic of the century ... but to me, it certainly is a total, classic record that is unbeatable in many ways ... I've often played Pet Sounds and cried. I played it to John [Lennon] so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time. The thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines ... and also, putting melodies in the bass line. That I think was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper, it set me off on a period I had then for a couple of years of nearly always writing quite melodic bass lines. "God Only Knows" is a big favourite of mine ... very emotional, always a bit of a choker for me, that one. On "You Still Believe in Me", I love that melody - that kills me ... that's my favourite, I think ... it's so beautiful right at the end ... comes surging back in these multi-coloured harmonies ... sends shivers up my spine.”

Eric Clapton said "All of us, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and I consider Pet Sounds to be one of the greatest pop LPs to ever be released.

Elton John : "For me to say that I was enthralled would be an understatement. I had never heard such magical sounds, so amazingly recorded. It undoubtedly changed the way that I, and countless others, approached recording. It is a timeless and amazing recording of incredible genius and beauty."

Roger Waters stated that along with Sgt Pepper, Pet Sounds "completely changed everything about records for me."

Pete Townshend :" 'God Only Knows' is simple and elegant and was stunning when it first appeared; it still sounds perfect"

Tom Petty: "I think I would put him up there with any composer - especially Pet Sounds. I don't think there is anything better than that, necessarily. I don't think you'd be out of line comparing him to Beethoven - to any composer."

So why is Pet Sounds recognized as one of the most influential and quintessential album in the history?
It was sonically revolutionary.

Yeah, Pet Sounds had a lot of influence. Much like Citizen Kane did.

But I don't like either, and hearing about their legacies won't make me suddenly appreciate them more.

No, you're totally right. That statement was ridiculous.

I like Pet Sounds to some extent (they have much better albums though) and I haven't watched Citizen Kane, but otherwise I agree. All influences could be set up as a chain that would go back to the very beginning of human nature, but that doesn't mean that whatever music that happened at that time is necessarily the greatest music of all time - influences are often used as perfecting existing music inventions and not just for making second rate ripoffs.

You don't like Citizen Kane? Pet Sounds I can very easily understand, but I'd be interested in reading what you don't like about Citizen Kane.

You're forgetting quite a large number of them. First ones coming to mind are Panda Bear's Person Pitch and part of Tomboy ; and the whole High Llamas catalogue.

But I am not really into pop much. I like rock.

I am glad this album exists and I understand the influence it had and am thankful for it, but I personally cannot listen to it without going into a diabetic coma because it is too sugary.
