I don't have any advice on where to start or what would be the best album to introduce you to jazz. There are so many different types of jazz (cool, avant-garde, hard bop, vocal, fusion). I don't even know what my first jazz album was. But here's a list of some albums that I highly recommend. Hope that helps.

Charles Mingus- Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Ah Um
John Coltrane- A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers- Moanin'
Miles Davis- Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way, Kind of Blue
Max Roach- We Insist!
Sonny Rollins- Saxophone Colossus
Sonny Sharrock- Ask the Ages
Ornette Coleman- Shape of Jazz to Come
Eric Dolphy- Out to Lunch

All of these artists were very prolific and have solid discographies, so be sure to explore everything that they have to offer.

Jazz is a great genre to get into. The music is very complex.
To start with, some great albums are:
Miles Davis-kind of blue, in a silent way
John Coltrane-love supreme, ascension
charles mingus-black saint and the sinner lady, mingus ah um
ornette coleman-shape of jazz to come, free jazz
sonny rollins-saxophone colossus

If it helps any, the first jazz album that I really likes was Miles Davis' Kind of Blue

Now that you mention it, maxxy, Kind of Blue is a pretty good introduction.

Don't go straight to Avant-Garde because that can be somewhat hard for the ear.

Best Jazz Album Ever:

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

The missing link between bop and avant garde. Best place to start for jazz and avant garde. No one can call themselves a fan of jazz without A Love Supreme.

Other Excellent Jazz Albums for starters:

Ornette Colemen - Shape of Jazz to Come
Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collosus
Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

After getting more into jazz and appreciating Avant Garde:

Sun Ra - Atlantis
David Murray - Murray's Steps
Don Cherry - Eternal Rhythm
John Coltrane - Ascension
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz

And try out:

Peter Brotzman Octect - Machine Gun

Incredibly hard to listen to and least accessible albums of all time but once you do get into it it's pure genius

Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme are excellent as an introduction to the genre.
One of the things that make jazz really interesting, each one have played with every one else. So for example on Kind of Blue you'll find that John Coltrane was in there, and he had played with Thelonious Monk before, and with Cecil Taylor and with Don Cherry and so on....
Bill Evans, played next to Charles Mingus, Oliver Nelson, Lee Konitz and so on....

Also, try to listen to different syles/subgenres, because as same as rock, some will like a certain style and the other not.

A few artists that have been really important to genre:
Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Art Tatum, Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, and many many more...
