Extremely ahead of it's time. It combined prog and jazz fusion, before either of those genres were big THÉMSELVES!!!!

What an album. Peaches En Regalia might be one of the most perfectly composed three and a half minute tracks ever. At first all the extended improvisation may seem a little boring but it's a hell of a lot of fun once you get into it, especially The Gumbo Variations. Ian Underwood is one of the most bad-ass sax players in rock, and his dirty blues-style jamming is one of the album's many highlights.

Though if you can skip the strange sounding, 'reverby' remix on previous CDs issues and try and get the original mix on vinyl or the new 2012 CD reissue.

This album leaves me a bit cold. Other Zappa albums from this period are better - Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka and Burnt Weeny Sandwich.

Amazing work. The more I listen to Zappa, the more I appreciate his genius.
