This album is a lot like alcohol.
When you first look at it as a kid, it seems superficial and dumb in all regards:
*It has seemingly adolescent lyrics
*The beats seem sorta cheesy
This is what a lot of the music community thinks about Trent's extraordinary debut.
BUT THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN THAT!!!!!
Just like alcohol, if you give it a chance, and let it cover your world, it really opens your mind. It's also extremely addictive. I've probably listened to Side 2 of this album over 65 times in the past year.
But here are two more reasons Pretty Hate Machine is NIN's best album:
*It was one of the very first independent digital albums EVER.
*It was one of the first indie albums in general to sell over a million copies.
*It has less filler than ANY other NIN album. Even Broken.
*The beats actually end up being really catchy once you get used to them. It's like The Low End Theory for angst-ridden teenagers.
*It has Trent's best songwriting, since the album is basically based on Iomi-esque MIDI riffs.
Also: If you want to listen to it, PLEASE get the 2010 Remaster. It makes a huge difference.

So?
Also, you listed five reasons.

Definitely inferior to The Downward Spiral. Though that may just be because TDS is far more influential for me. This is a common point of argument between me and my stepdad, he's adamant that Pretty Hate Machine is the greatest album made by any artist ever.

I'm sorry, but as much as I love TDWS, it just has way too much filler and "I hate my life" whining to make it a super-classic, and even then, The Fragile does the job of that much better than Spiral.

Frankly I think Pretty Hate Machine is Reznor's most cohesive album. Maybe not his best musically, but definitely the best songwriting overall. I've got I think 4 NIN albums, and this is about the only one I ever bother listening to more than one or two tracks from.
But, of course, there's no NIN in my top 100, one must note. Not a big fan. They've got some great music, but it's the exception. Most of their music is crap.
Sorry, did that post belong in the "controversial music opinions" thread? _________________ <(: @ >
