Something classical would be the obvious choice but I wonder whether there are contemporary albums that will fit nicely in the background. It would also be interesting to hear peoples suggestions as to what genre of music would be appropriate for a particular book.

I struggle to concentrate on what I'm reading if I can hear vocals so I tend to stick to instrumental stuff.

I can't listen to music while reading or studying, but here's some that might work:

Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill
William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
Dirty Three - Ocean Songs
Oval - 94 Diskont
Labradford
Talking Heads - "Drugs" on repeat

I can listen to most anything while working, but if I am reading a book I cannot have any music on.

Just don't. It takes takes away from the experience of reading and the experience of music. Why do we have to be multitasking all the time?
