For me personally, I just joined the site but I'd very much like to continue adding charts to it. As this is limited by my level, I am literally sitting here with my spotify and my iTunes open and attempting to rank every song and album I've ever listened to. I'm not going to spam it to the effect that you've mentioned but it is a little irritating honestly that it's a little difficult to level up. That said, I appreciate that system because it helps keep the charts more fair and balanced. I can see both sides of the argument here but I think there does come a point where people do just try to get points for the sake of getting points and not for helping the site grow. Maybe at each time leveling up one's account should be reviewed? I'm sure there's some bot that could be designed to flag accounts that leveled up in a day or leveled up solely on track name titles or something. I don't really know past that how this could be solved at all.

I appreciate the feedback. I mentioned in a previous post about increasing the points awarded per chart entry & this is going to happen in the next site update. I think this should definitely help new users.

Quote:
agree, but there are ways people can do this without spamming. Creating a chart is a quick way to gain points. I'm thinking if the points per chart entry was increased to 2 per album, this might help new users gain a foothold without having to resort to black-hat tactics.

2) As far as corrections go, I'm a freak who goes a little crazy when I see a song title like "First we Take Manhattan", "Were Not Gonna take It", or "Stairway to Heaven". I fix it because I feel it needs to be fixed, not because it gains points.

Um, apologies for being dense, but there seems to be nothing wrong with the bolded part.

EDIT: Yep, I just looked at the album's page, and it is erroneously listed as "Stairway To Heaven". Maybe we should have a thread explaining capitalization rules before we set everyone loose to make any changes they wish.

You're replying to something from November. Since that time, I have stopped correcting capitalization. Too many people complaining about it, so I stopped to appease the masses. But, for the record, the model that albummaster said he prefered was the one used at Discogs, where the first letter in every word in every song title is capitalized. I agree with him, but I'm not correcting them any more.

Yeah, sorry to dig up old conversations, I just felt compelled to clarify, haha.

Anyway, I guess albummaster is welcome to use whatever grammatical conventions he chooses. I've just personally never heard of that system of capitalization.

I don't want to de-rail the thread, but this is just in response. Capitalising the first letter of each word makes things simple for everybody to understand as it does not require a specialist knowledge of the grammar rules for all languages (not just English). It's simpler for people to understand, and far less time-consuming to administer, this way around. We've not made an unusual choice to do things this way. Other websites do this as well, not just BEA e.g. Amazon, Discogs, iTunes etc.

The database would be impossible to maintain accurately if we were to adopt separate grammar rules for every language on Earth as nobody here knows them all. If we had endless time and resources, then maybe we could have the grammar police for every language on Earth going through each track listing to make sure it is capitalised correctly, but this is simply not possible.

So what's the rule for album, song, and band names that are in non-latin writing forms? Like say, an album, song, or band titled in Japanese writing? I usually try to find a latin alphabet version of a band name or album title, since it keeps things consistent and makes it easier for others to search for the band or album. I'm usually more lazy with the song titles, though.

For example, "あふりらんぽ" vs "Afrirampo".

I think it depends on the band.

For example you almost never see ミドリ written as Midori (like it is on this site- my bad)
alternatively I have never seen Afrirampo written as あふりらんぽ
For Japanese it seems like most westerners use the Latin spelling of the band

For cryillic writing however it seems like westerners mostly keep it in cryillic. Probably because cyrillic is suuuuuper easy to pronounce.

New idea: por que no los dos?

For moderation, add two fill-in boxes by band names - one for Latin writing and one for whatever else (Japanese, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic, etc).

Perhaps the second writing would show up in parenthesis or something.

That way Midori and Afrirampo can potentially show up in Japanese search engines while us 'Muricans, Euros, or wherever else writes in our type of squiggles, can read it as well.
