I searched for the thread and couldn't find it. I can't imagine it has not already been done. If someone know where it is please point me to it. If everybody did like me and did not create because they expected it had already been done, well, here it is.
Please limit yourselves. I am posting a Top 15, you choose how many you are posting yourselves but by definition the notion of favorites does imply that you are leaving out most of the bands you love to only highlight the ones you favor among your loved ones.
1. Pink Floyd
2. Yes
3. Peter Gabriel (with Genesis until 1975 and the solo)
The order can be more fluid after depending on my most recent listening crave
4. Led Zeppelin
5. The Doors
6. Tom Waits
7. King crimson
8. Offenbach (the Quebec blues-rock band, not the classical composer)
9. Peter Hammill/Van der Graff Generator
10. Philip Glass
11. Kate Bush
12. Jean Leloup
13. Deep Purple
14. The Tragically Hip

My most listened on Last.fm probably gets it about right.
1. R.E.M.
2. The Beatles
3. Elbow
4. Arcade Fire (although I'm not sure about them so much anymore)
5. Sufjan Stevens
6. Radiohead
7. Sigur Ros
8. Bruce Springsteen
9. Coldplay
10. U2
11. The Flaming Lips
12. The National
13. Bob Dylan
14. The Antlers
15. Eels
Away from that though, I'd probably slip David Bowie in between Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay.

I think it has been done under "100 favourite artists" or something like that, which is why the search didn't pick it up (+ it's been inactive for a while).
To try with mine...
(more or less in order, not what I currently listen to, but overall):
Pink Floyd
Radiohead
My Bloody Valentine
The Beatles
Animal Collective
Grizzly Bear
Björk
N'toko
Talk Talk
Ekatarina Velika / Haustor / Idoli (can't decide on the order, EKV were the most prolific (and very consistent at that), Haustor have a near perfect discography of four albums, and Idoli released my favourite album of the three and also one of my favourite EPs of all time)
Pavement
Led Zeppelin
Aaand let's say U2 for #15, for all those great albums in the 1980s. The Strokes, Modest Mouse, Cocteau Twins, Broken Social Scene, Tool, Coldplay, RHCP could all go here as well

15. The Unicorns |
That's actually an interesting choice. I used to listen to the unicorns all the time, eventually I lost track of listening to them and completely forgot about them.
Anyways, here's my top 20:
1. Modest Mouse
2. Pink Floyd
3. Built to spill
4. Dire Straits
5. Tom Petty + Heartbreakers
6. Eels
7. The Replacements
8. Ice-T
9. Dispatch
10. Elliot Smith
11. Bowling For Soup
12. Everclear
13. the Shins
14. Talking Heads
15. Wu -Tang Clan
16. Megadeth
17. Black Sabbath
18. Guided By Voices
19. Manic Street Preachers
20. And, although I haven't put them on many of my charts because of laziness, Motorhead (should be on my charts next update).
