And I shall condemn someone to listen to this lovely record:

Gorguts- Obscura

Alright, a review of obscura, from the standpoint of someone who still gets the shit scared out of him by almost all extreme metal.

First the good stuff. I may not have much experience with or interest in the genre of death metal, I could still recognize and appreciate to a certain extent the intricacies of the songs and the instrumental proficiency of the players. There was a lot of polyrthmic stuff going on that I found pretty cool, and while the frequent use of dissonance was somewhat unsettling, it worked really well within the context of the album. It almost seemed like the individual pieces of the album didn't quite fit together, like the band had first made a solid conventional piece of music, and then the drycleaner fucked it up, but somehow it's better off as a result.

Unfortunately, I am faint of heart, and as such, I was unable to fully appreciate this album's experimental nature and its many intricacies because of one simple fact: like most extreme metal, Obscure scared the living shit out of me.

Oh well, maybe I'll revisit this album sometime in the future when I've become more used to the genre

Laughing Listening now, I'll be back with a review at some point. Laughing

@Dividesbyzero

Thats a great little review! If it means anything, Obscura is considered extreme and jarring even by extreme metal standards, I've seen it referred to as death metal's equivalent to trout mask replica once or twice...good job enduring it Laughing

Well compared to Gorguts its not "extreme". It's much slower paced and doesn't have have growling vocals. That said the vocals are...interesting to say the least. The last song on the album is absolutely beautiful though

Review:
Sui Generis- Pequeñas Anecdotas Sobre Las Instituciones
So I think from my first two listens that this was a solid album, which fairly effectively mixed prog rock elements into a sort of folk sound. The vocal style and occasional spareness in the arrangements gave the album a lightweight, almost relaxed feel at times. Most of the songs managed to be quite melodic while containing some interesting sounding chord progressions and instrumental interplay. The one noticeable drawback to the album was that some of the arrangements and keyboard sounds seemed badly dated and cheesy, even by progressive rock standards. Still, this was a really interesting album and a unique experience for me, and I'll certainly return to it in the future.

now to whoever is waiting on an album (I think Necharsian) I give this:

Townes van Zandt- Our Mother the Mountain
