IMO, it's the best Lips album, the Soft Bulletin is a great album, but I think Embryonic is a better translation of the band's experimentation. It reminds of fusion era Miles Davis and Syd Barret Pink Floyd, a sound I really missed. I think it will go down as their classic. My favorite track is Watching the Planets.
On a related note, has anyone heard their Dark Side of the Moon cover album? It came out about a week ago. Not as satisfying as Embryonic, but it's rather interesting. It mostly made me want to listen to the original, though.
The 'Dark Side of the Moon' cover album is creative, but doesn't reach the heights of the original, so sadly...it's not that easy to listen to. You're right, the same thing happens to me, I go straight back to Floyd's version.
As for Embryonic, I'm just about to take a listen after hearing it's comparison of Joy Division, Miles Davis, and Syd Barrett (which I all love!) Hope I like it!
