My indie favourites so far this year, difficult to decide who takes the lead.

Both have their moments and their flaws.

What do you think (if you have any interest in these 2 releases of course) ?

I'm leaning towards Veckatimest. It's less show off than the Animal Collective album which becomes tiring on repeated listens.

Grizzly Bear by default. I hate Merriweather Post Pavillon, I find it overrated and sloppy. I also like Veckatimest, it's relaxing.

Merriweather, by a large margin. Much more innovative (even if innovation is not something which I am constantly looking for), and the references they use to create something very original are more or less the music I've been into for a while. Plus, seeing Grizzly Bear onstage last summer somewhat belittled the great impression I'd had had over Veckatimest. Animal Collective is a must-see on stage.

As I pointed out in other posts concerning MPP, my main concern with the album is all the hype around it being innovative.

imo, rehashing old references into some giant musical mixer isn't the definition of innovative.
Beach Boy harmonies ? Grizzly Bear did that very well on the "Yellow House" album.
Kraftwerk electronics ? Grizzly Bear do it very well on "Two Weeks" (see the obvious reference in the video)
Talking Heads ? Bjork ? And so on... it is effective, but doesn't isolate Veckatimest by "a large margin".

Yeah, as much as I love MPP, I don't get why people talk about it being innovative. These guys wear their influences on their sleeve. The combination of those influences makes for a rather unique sound, but that can only go so far. I finally got around to listening to Strawberry Jam. Maybe the innovation talk has a lot to do with how much of a leap they made from that to MPP.

Haven't heard Grizzly Bear. I'll have to check it out.

Which makes it innovative to me. How much truly new, influenceless music can you actually hear ?

True.

Sure, AC are hype. Which means nothing except they're hype really. Some hype is shit, some hype isn't.

To you it doesn't, I respect that. To me it does.

True. Not on this one, and I'm a certified Beach Boys fanatic so there you go.

This is a genuine, no-irony question. is "a large margin" correct English ? (I'm French).

MPP reminds me of Psychocandy, which is basically the Velvet Underground + Beach Boys. Innovative, but at the same time very derivative. Nothing is without its influences, but AC's influences are very prominent.

"by a large margin" is correct English.
