VESPERTINE by Bjork (captain: CDQ)

Vespertine by Bjork

Year Released: 2001

VS

WE ONLY SING OF BLOOD OR LOVE by Dax Riggs (captain: Robert Anton Wilson)

We Only Sing Of Blood Or Love by Dax Riggs

Year Released: 2007

Note: will leave 12-24 hour voting period before polls open, giving a “digestion period” for people to perhaps catch up on listening and for captains to promote their choices.

I swore I wrote down every single album I hadn't heard. I messed up. I guess I'm off to listen to Dax Riggs.

I really liked both but it is definitely going to Bjork here. Amazing album.

Bjork has an excellent sense of atmosphere and what appears like a unique approach tooo... catchiness? Maybe not the best word.

So far I think Dax Riggs sounds alright. It doesn't inspire much thought for me though. It's up against tough competition I think. Maybe it'll grow on me some day, but Bjork it is.

One of my favorite Bjork songs. My vote obviously goes to Vespertine.

Listened to both for the first time last week. Leaning towards Bjork.

Vespertine was pleasant enough, but got boring pretty soon.

Dax Riggs, for me, was a mix of Nickelback, extreme-Americana and some goth touches. I didn't really enjoy it at all - I found it very generic.

I'm going to vote Vespertine, but I didn't really like neither.

Vespertine, is easy to overlook. The album doesn't deliver pleasure by the truckloads, it nourishes one spoonful at a time. She uses the lines from a favorite poet of mine, E.E. Cummings. The poet is notorious for using blank space and line structure to help convey emotion when words aren't enough. This album seems to be more than vocals, lyrics, melody and harmony. Its a conglomeration of individual ideas i dislike, but the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. I don't like Bjork, but her microbeats and gradients of emotion captured here easily make this one of the best albums from the early millennium. Comparing this album to the slew of my other favorites, this album doesn't get very far. But for this match-up, Vespertine is the obvious winner.
