i think that a good way to see who's the most important band or musician is to see in how many movies we can find him, with his own song or as a writer or a composer ...etc.

Classical music composers soudtracks are the most used with Wagner as the very top 1. in the top 10 only 2 "pop" artists Elvis and Bob Dylan

here's the top 10:

1 Richard Wagner
2 Mozart
3 Beethoven
4 Felix Mendelssohn
5 Johann Sebastian Bach
6 Gioacchino Rossini
7 Frédéric Chopin
8 Elvis Presley
9 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
10 Bob Dylan

the top 15 excluding classical music composers:

1 Elvis Presley
2 Bob Dylan
3 David Bowie
4 James Brown
5 John Lennon
6 Paul McCartney
7 Duke Ellington
8 Stevie Wonder
9 Marvin Gaye
10 Elton John
11 The Rolling Stones
12 Louis Armstrong
13 Madonna
14 Otis Redding
15 Jimi Hendrix

So what do you think about it, and who you expected to be in the top 10 ??

Sources: according to IMDB and my calculation ..... phew !! was quite long

For original scores:
John Williams (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jaws, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List and so many more...) (Spielberg's go-to guy)
and
Bernard Hermann (Taxi Driver, Vertigo, Psycho, North by Northwest, Twilight Zone, Citizen Kane, The Birds, Cape Fear, Obsession) (Hitchcock's go-to guy)

Without these guys, alot of film music history is missing...

and I'll add Ennio Morricone (Good, Bad, and Ugly) and Vangelis (Blade Runner) for harrisonfords, in case he doesn't find this...

and Johnny Greenwood for There Will Be Blood

In that case, it seems like the Pixies have been in afew movies lately. "Where is my Mind" from Fight Club and "Here Comes your Man" in I Love You Man." I'm pretty sure there have been more, but that's all I can remember now...

And I remember alot of Rolling Stones... V for Vendetta (Street Fightin' Man) and The Departed (Gimme Shelter) for instance.

Feel like he's the only person I talk about on this site, but Brian Eno's music has been in numerous films including Traffic, Trainspotting, and 28 Days Later to name a few.

actually Pixies have been in many movie soudtracks but not enough to be even in the top 100. Pixies were also in "Southland Tales", "Stuck on You". Pixies made a total of just 35.

Brian eno made more eppearance actually as a writer , as performer in appeared in "Velvet Goldmine", "Heat", "Se7en"...... in total he was in 79 movies and Tv shows
