it does seem that brazil is one of the few countries to keep pace with the us/uk in terms of cultural development.. probably because it doesn't just churn out insipid carbon copies of popular artists 10 years too late..

milton nascimento is a great torch bearer for mpb.. sergio mendes up there too when he's not covering dodgy beatles' numbers.. i also discovered an album named 'garra' by a dude called 'marcos valle' which is pretty good apart from one really weird showtune type thing in the middle (black is beautiful).. but it's worth getting for the first few tunes alone

i'm not so into tropicalia (don't like gal costa at all) although there are a couple of the mellower os mutantes tracks i can get into

recently i've been listening to a lot of the batucada drumming/percussion stuff.. got some stuff by paulinho da costa, timbalada and luciano perrone although the best stuff is usually on compilations like this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Batucada-Sound-...B000006Z9H

i wanna get some more of that shit..

"Black Is Beautiful" is my favorite track on that album Sad It is pretty cheesy, though.

You should check out India by Gal Costa. It's a little less out there than some of her earlier albums. Here's the opener:

I'll definitely check out some batucada stuff. Looks interesting.

I'd say go with Transa. That's his best I've heard so far. The "Nine Out of Ten" video in my first post is a song from that album. His self-titled album from '68 is also good, but it's not as great as Transa.
