The influence is unmistakable. However, I'd never put this on any of my charts. It's okay, but nothing spectacular. In Utero is better for me. That being said, "Lithium" is an irrevocably kickass song.
Track picks
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
5. Lithium
9. Lounge Act
12. Something In The Way

I feel the same way. It's a fantastic album, but there's no way I could say it's one of my favorites (though I once did).
Aside from the four singles, "Territorial Pissings" and "On a Plain" are my favorites. "Polly" is also a very nice softer song on the album, though there was one point where I couldn't stand it. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Putting this album on your overall chart would make you seem mainstream and uncool among the elitists _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Not as good as In Utero but still good. My favourite track is Territorial Pissing. Mostly because JMan disliking it makes it sound better.

I think a huge part of the success of Nirvana and Nevermind in particular is due to timing. |
I'm not really talking about success. It's obvious what made it successful though I feel that as far as 90's mainstream goes, a lot of what's about the same quality and has the same appeal as this seems to be derided for such. I assume what is the appeal is just that the songs are catchy, perhaps a little in your face at times, and have a certain attitude. I guess that's fine and all, but I dunno. I feel a lot has done that, yet is just disliked for the same reasons. Which is fine I guess.

all the negative comments on this album makes me second guess the site as a whole, i guess it's cool to be so aloof. to quote this album. 'i'd rather be dead than cool'

i find it funny that no one can seem to figure out what the song is about, which is what the chorus is about. but the verse is about something completely different, at least to me. what do you all think it's about? I'm wanting to see if anyone else has came to the same conclusion. _________________ I AM A CRACKED MACHINE

It's alright. Drain You and On A Plain are the only two songs I really like, and Lithium is pretty good too. Loved it when I was 10, but it doesn't really hold up as well to me now.

When I was a kid, my sisters were playing this in the house all the time. By the time I listened to it on my own accord in middle school it was anthemic. It remained incredibly influential to me, and I'm actually not enraged it gets put up on every top 10 of the '90s for it's influence. Today I listen to it and I still get a lot of energy from it. That being said, I much prefer In Utero (Kurt's realization of his favorite album, Raw Power) and might prefer Unplugged, but this album is still perfect. Kurt was a genius, Krist knew how to perfectly compliment him, and Dave just fuckin' banged the shit out of the drums like no one else. My favorite song has always been tied between "On a Plain" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but "In Bloom," "Lithium," "Come As You Are," and others would be standouts on any other album. I recognize seeing this album up top gets tiring, but honestly it's still one of the top 100 most interesting '90s albums put out, and the '90s were so goddamn good. Nirvana is a mainstream icon with good reason, and this is the album that allowed him to break onto your radio.

Great album. Currently #97 on my Overall chart. The following is what I wrote about it on my chart and it applies still:
"This album is just really good. It's so popular and adored by so many, and as a dude born in '89 into a family with 2 older sisters, I was subjected to this cult worship of Kurt Cobain so thoroughly that I avoided really giving this album credit. I do however now have it in me to see how excellent this album really is. Great distillation and clean presentation of much of the greatest Indie and Punk music that came before.
Best song: you know, the ones you love, the popular ones too." _________________ -Ryan
