Been a while since I last listened. I used to value Kanye West and Eminem over these when I would listen to rap music. I think there was one great song but I can't quite remember it right now. Confused

It's pretty good. It's extremely bottom-heavy, though. If the first half were on par with the second it would be a phenomenal album.

Definitely one of the most annoying records I've ever listened to. Give me almost any other rap artist ever instead.

Wow. pretty negative responses towards one of the best rap albums of all time. Maybe everyone's just sick of Flavor Flav's reality tv career. Politically charged, Public Enemy were to hip hop what Dylan and Ochs were to folk rock in the 60s.

[It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back] was the second hip hop album I've ever listened to (about eight months ago, I'd say), seeing it was hugley acclaimed and wanting to delve deeper into this genre. I was really disappointed. It wasn't at all my idea of a good hip hop record. It did not flow at all, it was the opposite of smooth. It was angry, the rhythms were hard, and it smetimes was even dissonant. After a few more listens, I gave up. Later, I listened to Ready To Die, which was my first hip hop love (and still is my favorite, though I might be biased). I listened to more hip hop and, one day, I was like "What if I listened to that Public Enemy record again?" Best idea ever. Everything which before seemed unlistenable and boring, this time seemed to fit perfectly. I think I have yet to hear an album which contains so much genuine anger. Scaruffi compared it to MC5; I love punk, but these guys aren't even close to Public Enemy.

I simply can't get into a single Hip Hop album from the 80's, not a single one, this one being no exception. Everything sounds so incredibly dated, the beats, Chuck D's flow, Flav's "Yeah Booooyyyy" gimmick...
Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos is the only somewhat tolerable track here and Tricky did a cover version that just blows the original out of the water.
I'll probably revisit it someday to see if my opinion changes, but it probably won't be in a near future. Too bad!

It's a good album and all, and both listens have been satisfying, but it's incredibly overrated, even in the field of hip-hop. It's all over the place, incoherent, and there are so many unnecessary noises. However, Don't Believe The Hype and Party For Your Right to Fight are pretty good. Other than that, it's just mediocre street stuff that, is revolutionary to a certain extent, but isn't exactly good.

Also, stop dissing this album like it's an unmitigated disaster - it's just really overrated.
