Even though I'm not a huge fan of Nirvana, this is their best release with some of their best songs, though that can also be said with Nevermind. Sometimes, I don't know what to do with this band and my opinions on them go back and forth and I listen to them on and off. Though, it is a bit extreme to put this in the top 50. _________________

A phenomenal album that is 100% deserving of its position in our overall rankings. It lacks the immediate melodicism and accessibility of its predecessor, but more than makes up for it with darker lyrics and a more engrossing sound. "Scentless Apprentice" leaves a little to be desired, but every other song on the album falls no short of outstanding, and the consistency of the songwriting easily measures up to that of Nevermind. "Very Ape", though short, is probably my favorite on the album, closely followed by "Milk It", "Serve the Servants", and "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter".

Nothing extreme about it. When Nirvana was around they were massive. We probably haven't seen a rock band at this level since Kurt died. There are other bands since then that have sold as much records, but the impact of Nirvana at the time was huge. Immeasurable. I don't think they were the best band at the time, but they deserve all of the praise.
I probably prefer In Utero over Nevermind but it's really close. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle is an underappreciated classic _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Equally as good as Nevermind, some might say is better. Just imagine where was Nirvana going with their music.
WHAT A GREAT FUCKING ALBUM!

In my opinion, the best of the 3 studio albums. Whereas Bleach felt amateurish, Nevermind was so overproduced it was a bore. Here, the mixture of raw punk songs and pop elements work perfectly.
The Steve Albini mastered tracks (vs Scott Litt's Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies) are superior though.

I like to think that, if Kurt Cobain had lived longer, Nirvana would have helped to bring more of the hardcore aesthetic into the mainstream. This album is probably closer to '80s alternative music than its predecessor and feels far more personal. Listening to it now, I can't help but hear it as a gradual descent into inner chaos, the culmination being an apology and Kurt's subsequent suicide. As good as it is, though, it was clear that he hadn't peaked yet. Such a sad, sad loss for rock music.
